(18,505 posts)One of the family members watched one of the movies on TV a few years ago, and that made me want to read it even less.
I have to say, I don't get the appeal to adults.
On the other hand, I'm going to reread The Hobbit this fall, which I first read decades ago when I was 10 years old.

(37,573 posts)when I was in the book business. Some of them are excellent reads - like the 3rd Harry Potter. Or at least enjoyable reads. Or I heartily endorse "If I had one wish". But the movie to that did not nearly do it justice (although I never saw the movie, I heard they made major changes, like the younger brother is a TV star. Sure, we can all relate to that In the book, he was just an ordinary little brother.) Seemed to me that the Harry Potter movies, although they generally followed the books, put more violence into the story in some subtle ways. At least for the 3rd book.
For myself, I tried to read the Hobbit in the summer of my sophomore or junior year of college, and did not get very far before the library book was overdue. I think I even renewed it, but still never got into it. I didn't get very far in the LOTR movies either. It just seemed too dark. The evil guy seemed in control right away.
But maybe that is sorta like today, when the evil money power seems to have taken over everything.

(60,010 posts)or rather, my inner child did, and enjoyed all but the last book.
For the same reason I loved the movie "Hook"...I grew up on Peter Pan, and the movie captured the intended feeling of the story.
Some books and movies I do not watch as an adult, I watch as a 10 year old and can enjoy them on that level.
Having said that, the last book of Potter was very obviously padded, and to have the movie version in 2 parts was
manipulative as all hell.

(33,688 posts)I was introduced to the books by one of the smartest people I've ever met - a friend's wife who holds a Ph.D. in medieval history. She's a very picky reader and had previously introduced me to the marvelous Robertson Davies. She recommended the Potter books with great enthusiasm and I read every one at least twice. I enjoyed every word, and I am not generally a reader of fiction.
If humanity survives another 100 years it is safe to say that Rowling's books will still be read often.
he'd be much better served by Winnie the Pooh.

(6,996 posts)Set to be released early next year "The Butler" is about a White House staffer who served many Presidents. The role of Saint Ronnie will be played by Alan Rickman.
Looking forward to this one.

I can see Josh Brolin doing Raygun...he is more of a chameleon actor.

(6,996 posts)I think they can pull it off. They are great actors. Some think Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln in the Spielberg film is a stretch. I don't.

Not everyone likes the books, and that's OK.

(382 posts)However, he didn't say this. It's an internet myth. The quote originated with a Harry Potter fan, was picked up by Harry Potter and Alan Rickman websites, and the quote was erroneously attributed to Rickman.

(12,406 posts)He did say some much better things such as: "I am rooting for Obama to win" and other supportive words for our party.
I have met him three times, including once in Dublin last year when he was in a play at the Abbey theater. He is an absolute knock out, and a brilliant man. His next film out will be Gambit with Colin Firth, due to be released October-ish. Can't wait!
