Ask any lawyer, and if their witness is going to testify, they'd want someone who:
1. Answers only the question being asked of him/her;
2. If the question requires a "yes" or "no" answer, gives a "yes" or "no" answer;
3. Does not grandstand or offer more information that is required; and
4. If he/she did not fully hear the question, asks to repeat it so that he/she is not giving an answer to something that they were not asked.
Mueller, a very skilled lawyer himself, understands this and as someone who strives to play as straight and narrow as possible, is doing exactly just this. It shouldn't be confused for him being old or feeble minded. He's being the "perfect witness."
Unfortunately, for the purposes of politics, it doesn't always make the best of TV. But it clearly is the way he operates.
And FWIW, knowing this, Democrats have managed to enter large parts of the Report into the record knowing that all Mueller will do is confirm that was his findings.
But those findings are damning and *should* speak for themselves.

(42,014 posts)Even his occasionally vague demeanor works in his favor, not against it, because he says what he says and thats it.

(1,115 posts)Telling Mueller how to do his job. What a waste of time listening to
these whining rethugs.
I am glad that Mueller does not have my demeanor, I would have came unglued.
I am sure glad that I have Mueller and Pelosi on my team.

One of them tried to delve back into the dossier. Mueller simply said I would not agree with that characterization (or something to that effect). You could hear the wind go out of the Repubs sails.

(43,296 posts)he doesn't stray much into politics, it's like his answers have a filter that calculates to minimize any political aspects or interpretation that might be part of his answer. We need that I think, but it might not have the impact of law in an era of skewed partisanship as in 2019.
