Since this was published, I've personally spoken with an astronomer (former director of SETI) who said current consensus is that the dimming is being caused by dust. Over 19,000 images in the last five years have shown blue light as preferentially blocked in the dimming events, regardless of how long they last. Red light is preferentially transmitted, a phenomenon indicative of dust particles down to a certain size.
