Girl tossed into air by bison at Yellowstone

A bull bison at Yellowstone National Park charged a group of people ignoring park safety rules and tossed a 9-year-old girl into the air Monday afternoon in the Old Faithful Geyser area. For 20 minutes, tourists approximately 50 in number got to within 5 to 10 feet of the bison near Observation Point Trail before the bison turned on the crowd, Yellowstone National Park announced Tuesday.

The girl, from Odessa, Fla., was taken by her family to Old Faithful Lodge and treated by park emergency medical providers. She was later taken to and released from the Old Faithful Clinic. A park official told USA Today/For The Win Outdoors that "we are unable to provide the extent of the girl's injuries, but we do know that she was treated and released."

No citations have been issued, but the incident is under investigation.

"Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild," Yellowstone National Park said in a statement. "Stay 25 yards away from all large animals-bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves. Never approach animals, never feed wildlife ...”

There was a man walking up to a bison calling out, "Moo, Moo." I got my kids in the car and kept moving on. Even at their youmg age, they knew that man was wrong.

I spent 30 years teaching Natural Resources Management at a local college. Very many of my graduates became interpretive rangers at USFS, NPS, BLM and many other state and federal agencies. I kept in touch with most for many years. They could each write a book of the stupid things visitors do and ask. Easy to understand that 30 percent of this nation believe trump and think science is fake news. Idiocracy is thick in MurkKKa.

Not her fault her parents are idiots.

In my younger days I worked cattle. I would not let a 9 year near many of the mean-assed beef cows we worked. Even as a strong young man you could not turn your back on them. But a wild Bison!

The mixed breeds we had in Louisiana were even worse. And on the few occasions we worked Santa Gertrudis it was a real rodeo! The cattle probe(hot shot) was not enough. You needed a club!

I've been run over by one! No fun when they break through a fence, and want to go hiking. (I did not build the fence.) And I've been around buffalo, and when they are in the mood to explore greener pastures, fences don't hold up, and they can be rather unfriendly.

The parents of the little girl are idiots.

Fortunately, as you know, most cows are really stupid and will stay with the herd. But very occasionally there will be one that once they do it keep at it. They are usually for the market!

But normally they can’t remember what they did 10 minutes ago.

Now that said, when it comes to raising their calfs they are usually really good at it. At least the half wild ones I used to work.

But believe me, Angus cows are not that bad. The white faced black cows all over the south are hazard to those working them! Throw in the Brahma crosses (Bremmer down here!) and they can be crazy!

We had one herd of Jerseys we worked on. It was like vacation! They were like pet dogs!

This is over 30 years ago. Thanks for the memories!

But enough thread hijacking! Compared to wild Bison all the animals we dealt with are soft. I can’t imagine putting a child, or myself in that situation. Those things will kill you and then go for breakfast!

There are a lot of bison, and they roam around like they own the place (which they do). And they all kinda look alike to me at least: there are smaller ones, and big ones, and even bigger ones.

While the larger groups stay in meadows suitable for remote viewing, when we were there last summer we saw a lot of single (I presume) bulls walking along the roads by themselves on their way from one grazing area to another. And we saw plenty of hoofprints in and around the hot springs.

.. between me and a bison was close enough. They are
very big animals. By accident I walked real close to 3 or 4
in a little grove of Cottonwood trees ... I backed away ASAP and when I was out of sight of them I ran about 1/4 of a mile.

Yellowstone had signs up all over telling people to stay away from the critters.

instead of reading the signs posted with the rules and warnings. That kid's guardian should be questioned or at least lectured to about common sense and following rules that are there for a reason. They will most likely turn around and sue the park for not protecting them better.

And then did what wild animals do. He felt threatened, he protected himself.

Bison are huge. I knew a guy that came around a blind curve in the highway in Wyoming, and ran head on into a herd. His little truck was demolished, and the buffalo sauntered on off.
