(31,989 posts)How do you folks in the South endure this soul-choking heat for months at a time? Dont you feel imprisoned, too?

(2,036 posts)10 months out of the year. And mostly without a/c. The other two are spent with my wife in Baton Rouge. Gotta say, its a positive vacation from the heat Im used to.
How to survive it? Up early, nap often, and lots of fans. We cover the windows *outside* with rattan mats soaked in grey water to keep the sun out and heat down. And dont walk the dog between noon and 4. It is impossible for me to get any work done in the afternoons over there. I have no idea how the British managed wearing their idiotic woolen suits.

The heat and humidity is life sucking. It didn't seem so bad when i was young, but its hell now.

(63,912 posts)I felt pretty good coming out of the shower and into nice clean clothes. For lunch I had cold yohgurt and some vanilla ice cream. Chicken pot pie for dinner with some cold fresh fruit. More iced tea.
Hubby is watching an old British Scrooge movie (to make us feel cooler). It's odd but strangely OK.

(90,674 posts)...because for whatever reason sudden cold kind of hurts. But depending on my personal heat index, I can gradually lower the water temp until it is fully cold, and let it pour right on the top of my head. My gods does it feel good.

(26,260 posts)It's 94, today, and tomorrow is going to be in the high 70's!!
I'm doing much more going in and out of the house than I did yesterday, while keeping an eye to the sky. There's some VERY colorful satellite activity to our north west. Also LOTS of scattered, mostly small area power outages on the west side of the state. Looks like a big part of Michigan is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.
I was talking about the weather with the security guard at the store, and he smiled and said "At least it isn't snow!" Yea, I had to agree.

(26,260 posts)The ones I started from seed, and almost lost to the wet, cool Spring, are finally starting to produce. Now I have to hope for an extended, warm Autumn so the fruit will have time to ripen.

(15,536 posts)and she said the only thing that really likes this heat are tomatoes! Isn't that the truth. Usually by now I'm seeing tomatoes at the farmers markets but not yet. I think they're going to be late this year as is the corn.
The plants I bought from the local Farmer's Market are doing ok - just a little behind schedule. I'm pretty geeked that I'm finally going to be picking my first Summer Squash, tomorrow.
Backseat Driver
(4,392 posts)but tomatoes won't fruit if over 90 degrees during the day, and just too hot overnight as well. No zukes or squash due to powdery mildew attack though plants still green and alive. Awaiting a nice long 5th cuke and the growth of some babies, but we'll see. Green cabbages making small heads; red cabbages not so much but not chewed up either, so I've hope.
Bees are in short supply as well. I've seen a few bumbles, but only, count 'em, two honeybees this whole season.
Did make me smile to see a hummer this morning getting a long, slow drink at the feeder; perhaps he'll be back near sundown???
Siwsan
(26,260 posts)I had started them from seed, along with the Golden tomato, which has lots of blossoms but still hasn't fruited. The sweet peppers are also slow, although the Red ones fruited pretty early. I'm pretty sure I'll have to do some major supplementing from the local Farmer's Market, this year.

(33,342 posts)93F (had some clouds provide a little relief) here and 64%.
Started nailing some joists about 14 ft off the ground at 6 am. 4 trips up and down the ladders for each joist. Drenched by 7; stopped by 11. Guzzled nearly 4L of water so far today.
I'm too old for this crap.
malaise
(268,976 posts)There's a decent breeze and we have several fans. The evenings are quite nice.
Yesterday I cleaned the inside of my car and like you I was drenched in minutes. I drink a lot of water and eat oranges and tangerines as if they're going out of season. Chilled pineapple is really nice as well.

(33,643 posts)Granted everyplace is A/C'd (or at least w/a swamp cooler), but you end up not wanting to do much of anything for like 3 months.
Fortunately the rest of the time it's not bad. But summer SUCKS.
Been about 4 straight weeks now of highs over 105, had a few days earlier this week over 110 ... but at least, yeah, it's a dry heat, usually under 20%. Makes it more bearable.

Where I've been it's been in the mid 90's with no a/c!
So I'm actually looking forward to getting home to a/c again.
Did you end up going to see the Cure movie?
I'm so bummed I missed it....

(115,683 posts)94F, dew point 80, heat index 115 in Minneapolis. But early this morning a cold front came in, and we got a thunderstorm and a bunch of rain and the temperature dropped to 63, where it remains. So if you're east of Minnesota, that front is probably coming your way (Wisconsin is getting pounded right now) and things will improve in another day or two. 63 degrees feels so good!
Siwsan
(26,260 posts)Fortunately, we got a good drenching from yesterday's storms, so if these miss us, at least we got SOME moisture into the earth.
I keep going out to the veg garden to enjoy seeing the progress this heat has FINALLY kicked into action.

(11,457 posts)At home in Oregon it's in the 90's but we don't have humidity and we do have air so ok when home.
But I am still in Ireland. It's been a rainy cool week, today just cloudy but very windy low 60's.
Just feels strange to read about the heat. I am trying to figure out how to walk to bus tomorrow without getting soaked, winds are supposed to be 25-30mph while raining. I have a 25 min walk.
Either that or do nothing in bnb all day. But I would rather get wet than heat stroke.
Be careful everyone!!

(11,457 posts)All over. Funny you say that because so far out of my month and half and lots of places Donegal town and Inishmaan the middle Aran Island are my favorites.
I thought Doolin would be before I came but without a car its too spread out lots of places are miles out and its gotten so touristy its lost its coziness except the night I booked music in someones house, a couple of musicians started home sessions to get it back. Worth every penny!

(617 posts)The humidity on the East Coast and Southern states makes heat waves much worse than comparable temps on the West Coast. 100F in Los Angeles is still bearable (bordering on uncomfortable). 100F in NYC or Wash DC is like living in the deepest depths of hell.

(63,221 posts)I am holed up in my apartment with the AC and am not planning to leave until it breaks. Yesterday, I felt like I could barely breathe it was so oppressive. As long as I can go online and watch movies, I'm fine. There is always a cold shower, which is refreshing as well.

(10,136 posts)If you can do it, get up very early - before dawn if you can - and do all your heavy work and outdoors activities before 11 AM. Then have a light lunch and take a nap until 4ish.
I realize that not everyone can do this. And not everyone lives in a place where it cools down enough in the evening to make things bearable. If you do, though, open all your windows at night to get the cooler air, then close them (and close the curtains) when the sun comes up. I have 2' of eaves all around my house that keeps it shaded through most of the Bay Area's rare heat waves. A lot of houses on the East Coast aren't built for heat, though.
Otherwise, avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, stay out of the sun as much as possible, and if you have to go out, wear a broad-brimmed hat or carry a parasol. Drink more water than you think you need, eat light meals. I find watermelon a refreshing snack on hot days - it's mostly water and sugars with a bit of fiber.
As for other activities, I mostly read - or post to DU!
