Trump Administration Proposes Slashing Regulations for Nuclear Power Plants

https://www.democracynow.org/2019/7/19/headlines/trump_administration_proposes_slashing_regulations_for_nuclear_power_plants

Headline July 19, 2019

The Trump administration is preparing to roll back government regulations on nuclear power plants, with staffers at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recommending allowing the nuclear industry to carry out more “self-inspections” while slashing the size and scope of radiation-protection and emergency-preparedness inspections at nuclear plants.

I hear Chernobyl is lovely in the spring; maybe we’ll be lucky enough to get one of our own.

Rick Perry is on it! While we're at it, let's just get rid of the DOE. The business of America is business.

And the media follows Donald Dummkopf from tweet to tweet while our government is hollowed out by the hour.

BTW when's the last time the news covered what is going on (and not happening at the same time) at Fukushima?

We cannot survive another year and a half of him, yet alone another 5 and 1/2. There has got to be a way to get rid of him. I can think of one very good way, but I can't say it here or I would be banned forever and get a little visit from the FBI.

do everything we can to get him removed from office. And to block every possible move he can make legislatively.

Keeping the House and flipping the Senate would at least set up some guardrails. AND a few more statehouse takeovers, too.

We have no other options. Impeachment first. The. Drag people to the polls by the hair if you have to! We have to turn out enough votes to overpower whatever Russia tries to do this time.

No violence! That will only allow him to declare himself a martyr.

No violence, although I have my fantasies at times. I was just thinking maybe of a natural event that would take him out for good. Everything else you have said is good. I am just worried that they will cheat again and that he will never go willingly. We can't have that happen again.

This is the most exciting thing since man went to the moon. Hey, maybe Space Force can be in charge of building a nuclear facility on the moon.

Nuclear industry has been pushing for less oversight, and it’s working
https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2019-07-17/nuclear-commission-considers-cutting-back-on-nuclear-power-plant-inspections

Fewer mock commando raids to test nuclear power plants’ defenses against terrorist attacks. Fewer, smaller government inspections for plant safety issues. Less notice to the public and to state governors when problems arise.

They’re part of the money-saving rollbacks sought by the country’s nuclear industry under President Trump and already approved or pending approval by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, largely with little input from the general public.
SNIP
Maria Korsnick, president of the industry’s Nuclear Energy Institute trade group, said she welcomed changes in NRC plant oversight “to ensure that it reflects a more robust understanding of the current performance of the U.S. nuclear fleet.”

Opponents say the changes are bringing the administration’s business-friendly, rule-cutting mission to an industry — nuclear reactors — in which the stakes are too high to cut corners.
SNIP
In general, according to attendance logs, the rollbacks are being hashed out at meetings attended almost solely by commission staffers and nuclear industry representatives. Occasionally, a single reporter or representative for private groups monitoring or opposing nuclear power is shown as attending.
SNIP
In January, in one of the comparatively few widely reported changes, commissioners rejected staff recommendations for making nuclear plants harden themselves against natural disasters on the scale of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that caused meltdowns at three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.
