President Donald Trump contradicted reports that First Lady Melania Trump and White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump objected privately to rally chants urging that U.S. citizen Rep. Ilhan Omar be sent back to Africa. Rep. Omar was born in Somalia.
Following the uproar over Trumps North Carolina rally, during which he stood silently as the crowd chanted Send her back! for a full 13 seconds, anonymous leaks to several news outlets said that Ivanka and Melania Trump had objected privately to Trump.
According to The New York Times, Mr. Trumps inner circle immediately appreciated the gravity of the rally scene and quickly urged him to repudiate the chant. Ms. Trump, his elder daughter and senior adviser, spoke to the president about it on Thursday morning, the people familiar with the discussions said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
And CBS News reported that Trump took a lot of heat from his family over the racist chants, and that He heard from first lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka and Vice President Mike Pence.
But on Friday, Trump quashed those efforts at some good PR for the women in his life by calling those reports fake news.

(13,259 posts)to begin with. They were playing the charade that his womenfolk were appealing to his better angels. But we all know he has no better angels. They were just adding another mini-chapter to keep the entire story alive.

(2,393 posts)There is no one in his inner circle who objected to the chant. They have a few reporters on speed dial to get stories like these out after trump makes outrageous statements. It's a way to control the story as well as give cover to Ivanka.
They spread the same crap before the election, suggesting Ivanka would be a calming influence on trump, a voice of reason. Why anyone bought that I don't know. She is just as stupid, greedy, and corrupt as the rest of the cabal.

(21,575 posts)We don't know what official they quoted but when I heard that I laughed and thought "no they didn't". Whoever the times quoted just made that up to, like the OP article says, generate some sort good PR. I feel like the Times should have known better then to just take a comment about anyone in this administration being concerned over racism without a few billion grains of salt.

(11,316 posts)People are forgetting (perhaps?) that Trump initially walked back the chant thing. "Wasn't me!!" Now the POTUS is walking back the walk back. (because he's Donald, approximate emotional development 3yr old) Why the two step, if someone wasn't objecting? Without providing cover for people who really don't deserve any .. it's not conceivable that a lot of Rs had the initial reaction that this was really bad messaging? "OMG .. he's doing another Charlottesville!!"
