I spent today with a man whose mom saved the July 21, 1969 Chicago Daily News for the moon landing coverage. (Column coming tomorrow.) It also contained this op-ed. 50 years ago. Unbelievable.

(6,556 posts)It is a great refresher course on why the United States came into being. A place for a fresh, new start to life where "all men(and women) are created equal". Time for some of us to remember this!

(2,097 posts)It was an horrible time then. People were equally as awful. And we came through it, and improved. Yes, it's a constant struggle. Yes, it's two steps forward and one step back. Yes, the progress is slow and incremental, but it is relentless. Despite them, we are moving forward. And we will keep moving forward. We have been in this place before and we prevailed.

sold me his old car when he went in the navy.
I put on of these stickers on that car for one day, read this and removed it.
This is when I became a lefty.

(768 posts)Just started a thread on a similar topic. We like to pretend that we have left the Jim Crow era behind us, but there is no doubt that racism and white privilege still run strong in the heartland of this country.

(32,645 posts)If you love America, then you must support - ME! You must support the Vietnam War because that's what the real patriotic Americans want.
Of course Nixon's whole story changed after Watergate hit the fan. But the "Love it or leave it" nonsense was how he got re-elected by a landslide. He made people forget that in 1968 he ran on a pledge to end the Vietnam War. Four years later, the war was still going on and Nixon had no intention of ending it.
However this newspaper columnist in 1969 shows that not everyone was buying it, even then. I'll bet he voted for McGovern.

(1,239 posts)The counter bumper sticker was
America Change it or Loose it.
Another one that caught my attention around this time was the:
To have Peace, one must Prepare for War.
Although I never saw a counter to this one in my mind I would say.
Those that Prepare for War, Get It.
