Residents in West Virginia are using wasp spray as an alternative form of methamphetamine, according to officials.
West Virginia State Police called the use of wasp spray a cheap fix for the drug.
People are making a synthetic type methamphetamine out of wasp spray, Sgt. Charles Sutphin told ABC Charleston affiliate WCHS Monday.
Police believe wasp spray was behind three overdoses last week. It was not immediately clear how the people consumed the spray.

Sutphin said the physical effects include erratic behavior, extreme swelling and redness of the hands and feet.
Pyrethroid, a chemical found in wasp sprays, can cause allergic reactions in some people and repeated exposure could increase the intensity of the reaction, according to a recent study done by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on pesticides.

(31,261 posts)The legitimate push to limit the amount of opioids being sent to places like WVa and outright bad policy decisions by politicians in those states. More reason to decriminalize Pot and encourage states to build laws that their citizens are comfortable with. If those people could grow a certain amount of Pot in their backyards legally, they likely would not be so brazenly endangering their lives.

(959 posts)the people who are cooking wasp spray into meth-lite are way to far gone to benefit. I honestly don't know what do to about people that far gone, they are walking dead and it really breaks my heart.
I live in rural Indiana and have had a couple people I know fall down that hole, but I am so thankful none of my family has gotten hooked on that crap

(31,261 posts)but coming up with sane laws on Pot coupled with robust public education could stop young kids from following them.

(959 posts)the opioid oversupply to meth route would have happened wether weed was legal or not.
synthetic drugs are designed to hook as many as possible at first exposure. Just saying "pot should be legal" is a major cop out to the real problems of an over-zealous drug industry pumping their poison into every corner of the nation.

(31,261 posts)Pressure that looks to be having the intended effects, with unintended consequences.
Making Pot legal gives people that are going to try drugs an alternative to what is going on around them. We may not save 100% of the people taking the recreational drug use route, but even if we only get 10% of those people to try Pot instead, that is progress, IMO.

This story is here because the war on (some) drugs is a war against a human drive to... use drugs.

(31,261 posts)Seriously. Those people are desperate because of a combination of their own addiction and bad laws regarding legal Pot where they live.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mud_dauber
Mud dauber (or "mud wasp" or "dirt dauber" is a name commonly applied to a number of wasps from either the family Sphecidae or Crabronidae that build their nests from mud. Mud daubers belong to different families and are variable in appearance. Most resemble long, slender wasps about 1 inch (25 mm) in length.[1] The name refers to the nests that are made by the female wasps, which consist of mud molded into place by the wasp's mandibles. Mud daubers are not normally aggressive, but can become belligerent when threatened. Stings are uncommon.

(6,110 posts)And you are right, when I break the nest with a long stick, they just fly away.
Back in Chicago burbs, I was painting outside trim on windows on 2nd floor.
So I am on this long ladder, with brush in 1 hand and holding on to ladder with other.
I guess there was a wasp nest there which I did not see. It was definitely not Mud Daubers!
The nest was sand colored and those wasps are SOB aggressive. He/she landed on my ear
and kept stinging me with no hand free to knock the damn thing off of me.
It was a painful sting, my ear lobe got swollen red like a small tomato!

(8,751 posts)Pyrethroid in spray bottles has synergists that make it way more toxic. One of the most common synergists for these pesticides is PBO - Piperonyl Butoxide. So, it's never pyrethroids alone. It's a f**king stew of horrible chemicals - like Roundup is.
Yrs ago, I worked with kids in a low income neighborhood who were "sniffing" silver spray paint. The other kids called them the "sniffers." I have a grandaughter fighting addiction - it's such a horrible, horrible thing.
