all elements of socialism found in America?
I know that the Republican party prefers people to think in black and white terms (socialism bad; capitalism good), but in reality we live in a society with a blend of both capitalism and socialism.
So, lets list some of the forms of socialism found right here in the US.
I'll start with these:
Social Security
Medicare
Medicaid
Public Education
Roads
Public Transportation
Police Departments
Fire Departments
Military
Veterans Administration
Unemployment Compensation
Public Libraries
Parks including our amazing National Parks
EPA
CDC
NIH
Feel free to add to the list.

And yes, many (most? ) Repubs would be fine with eliminating most or all of those.

(13,225 posts)But truth be told the Republicans who are using the term to describe Democrats are technically wrong as well. They misconstrue any attempt to deal with the growing income disparities in this country as "socialism."
Republican politicians and their financial backers would indeed LOVE to destroy many of these programs, but I truly believe the majority of Americans would disagree with those attempts if they understood what was at stake.

(7,816 posts)socialists to about the same degree...because of your list, and more. most countries are.
But expanding any one of these to be more efficient or more comprehensive causes advocates to all of a sudden become 'soooo-shall--ists' like it's out of the mainstream. We allow this label to mean something negative even in discussions between dems, when it should be easy enough to provide proper context and get back to talking about specific programs rather than labels.
