(358 posts)The Republican voters who are sticking with Trump have to know that Trump will be investigated and impeached. I doubt that he will be re-elected but if that happens, he will be continue to investigated and impeached. In fact If Trump loses he will continue to be investigated. There is no escape. If the Republicans don't understand that now, they will eventually come to understand that a vote for Trump is a vote for endless investigations and impeachment. Hopefully enough of them see the futility.
Nancy Pelosi is waging a war of attrition. She is playing the long game and her strategy is the correct one.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jul/11/donald-trump-jr-email-chain-russia-hillary-clinton
The emails show music promoter Rob Goldstone telling the future US presidents son that the crown prosecutor of Russia had offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father.
British-born Goldstone adds in the exchange of 3 June 2016: This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its governments support for Mr Trump.
Seventeen minutes later, Trump Jr welcomes this with the reply: If its what you say, I love it, especially later in the summer.

Most especially it could make a difference in the senate races. House investigates, sets out the evidence, impeaches, Republicans blindly vote party lines and back trump, Senate does the same.. And now we have solid evidence that some of these more vulnerable senators are not moderate or in line with their states

Why do you think empty hearings will change what they do?
The only way to remove him from office is to own the House and Senate. If we get over our bad case of stupidity and self-centeredness, we can vote him out and kick turtle out of the Senate leadership. If not, having given trump a tool like a failed impeachment hearing will only get us 4 more years of hate and greed.

There are still a great many people in this country who think we are in only slightly weird political times. They are too busy trying to pay bills to keep up with the things we here on DU actively devour.
This mess is so huge that the tv networks don't even know how to present it to their "consumers". House hearings into the criminal activities can bring the general public up to speed. Instead of the occasional buzz about racist rallies, the electorate gets ongoing fact-finding day after day after day. Months of this, with the occasional bombshell that even broadcast tv can't ignore, will have most voters informed of the scale of the threat to their very lives and livelihood.

If somebody who is indicted for a crime fails to be convicted, exactly how are they then considered to be held responsible for their accused crimes? The only thing impeachment will do is to allow Trump to crow and brag about how he was vindicated of the false charges against him. And it won't take long to get sick of that.

(15,290 posts)Tomorrow the Michael Cohen search warrants and other government filings are going to be released to the public. Barr tried to get some redactions, but the judge said no and he will release all documents unredacted. There will be a lot of new information out there showing how Individual 1 was involved in paying hush money while holding the office of president.
Next week Mueller will testify. That will be wall-to-wall coverage not even the Trumpers can avoid seeing.
After those two events, I believe Dems will overwhelmingly support opening an impeachment inquiry as the best way to get all the information out in public. Dems don't even have to vote on impeachment, but they do need to have attention focused on one committee, the Judiciary, not divided among 6 or 7 different ones. Nadler can call members or staff from those committees as expert witnesses if needed.

(3,433 posts)I don't believe Pelosi is going to allow it. We could get Democrats to vote for impeachment today. They may not publicly support it but it's a vote was taken they would vote to impeach. She is never going to support impeachment unless the Senate is on board and they are never going to be on board and therefore we will never see impeachment. Pelosi is looking at this entirely from a political point of view rather than an duty and obligation.
She is hoping that these hearings and inquiries sway public opinion to force Republicans. That is the only plan. It's not secret. It's not Grand. It's not 7th dimensional chassis other people have stated. Quite frankly it's obvious and it's the only way she will ever allow impeachment to take place
These hearings will never change public opinion. The only thing that may change their opinion is if we fall into a recession and the economy goes in the tank. People need to lose their jobs and houses and their retirement in order for them to wake up and pay attention.
I'm sorry if this isn't what some people want to hear but I truly believe it's the reality. We could have a million hearings and Mueller testify. The media is not going to give it a fair shake and the public is not going to be tickled enough to wake up and pay attention.
If at this point you have not formed an opinion on impeachment then you never will unless something shakes you out of your stupor... that something is always money

(4,448 posts)is really a myth. How many people in your lifetime have you seen flip their views due to a single candidate/politician? It's really pretty rare. And those that do, they generally only do it once.
As for the hearings. Well it's not 1972 anymore with 3 channels and all 3 channels holding Watergate hearings. The only people that will watch the hearings are those who have already read the Mueller report and followed along already.
The notion that a mass of political naive people will switch away from Netflix to watch CSPAN and suddenly learn that Trump is compromised is just silly. Those that know already know. Those that don't will never know.
What matters is getting people out to vote - our people.
Nancy Pelosi is weighing - will a failed impeachment get more Dems out to vote, or get more Republicans out to vote? Reasonable people can argue over that, but it's clear that Pelosi has already decided this for herself.
