(35,374 posts)It wasn't quite a willing NATO member anyway. The entire Gulen business really pissed off the Great Erdogan and Turkey's been playing nicey-nice with Russia for a few years. This purchase dates entirely to Trump times, but the attitude that led to the purchase has been going for a while.
Perhaps it was the Gulen affair, perhaps support for Kurds, maybe the lack of willingness of the US to engage seriously in the ME and pulling mostly back while others were pushing harder to influence, perhaps it's Turkey's wanting to balance itself so as to be able to be seen as more neo-Ottoman ... I've heard various explanations. All are speculative, some are even plausible, few are potent enough to sway me in isolation.
