Bobby Jindal wants more big government money for Louisiana
by Laura Clawson
Hurricane Isaac is keeping Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal away from the Republican National Convention, but a hurricane will not be enough to keep him from being partisan in the news. Jindal is assailing the Obama administration for supposedly not giving Louisiana enough federal aid.
But the usual FEMA pre-disaster protocol has been activated. The Obama administration has approved Jindals request for a disaster declaration. The administrations actions thus far have earned plaudits from the states two senators including Sen. David Vitter (R-LA). And moreover, the steps the administration has taken are broadly similar to the Bush administrations initial response to Hurricane Gustav in 2008, which Jindal did not publicly criticize.
Like any good Republican governor, Jindal has a long record of hypocrisy on federal funding, taking the "big government bad, now give me government money" approach. And when it comes to disasters, he's had problems with fishy stories and dubious deployments. And now that there is massive flooding and untold damage from Hurricane Isaac, keep a close eye out for a gap between Jindal's stories and the facts. He's already looking to turn natural disaster into partisan advantage; he's not going to stop.

(6 posts)As a Calfornia tourist who was stuck in the Superdome I know that voters' memories are so short. It is incredibly important WHO our national leader is as to how we respond to disasters, whether natural or unnatural. Many past Presidents (both Republicans & Democrats) have responded powerfully and immediately to earthquakes, mass murders, tornadoes, firestorms, etc.
Days after Katrina, Pres. Bush said, "No one could have foreseen the breach of the levees." Six months after Katrina videos and transcripts were uncovered that showed him being warned by experts days in advance that the levee breaches were quite probable and that the hurricane would be horrific. He simply said that "everything was taken care of".
When you have a political party that places the welfare of the rich over the poor and middle class and invading other countries under false pretenses as a higher priority than responding to an immediate crisis in our own country Bush's lack of response was no surprise.
