Are you listening Christians?
hlthe2b
(102,419 posts)nor is it embarrassment nor shame. He's pissed that he's being put in this situation while being filmed.
Every bit the sociopath that Trump is.
Cosmocat
(14,575 posts)he hates these people with every bone in his body.
I see complete disdain for the subhumans he was forced to have to be in the presence of.
hlthe2b
(102,419 posts)Not sure how you confused it. He resents being there.
PatSeg
(47,649 posts)I don't know how he feels about the migrants, but in that short time, it looked like he found the situation far worse than he imagined. It is possible he feels some compassion, but if he does, he won't do anything about it. He will be the good little sycophant and go along with whatever Trump wants. Of course, the sight and smell could have just overwhelmed him and the momentary look of concern could be disgust and disdain for the people being detained.
With Pence, it is rare for there to be the slightest variation in facial expressions, so it is quite an event when his face shows an almost emotion.
Ligyron
(7,639 posts)I mean, what the hell should his expression be? If he smiled and waved at them would that be a better look? Nope, he'd be accused of finding it humorous and taking this lightly.
I guess open mouth shock followed by a hand over said mouth and a slow shaking of the head side to side with that "OMG, No" look might be best but then we'd wonder why he didn't actually do something afterward about what he obviously saw was a humanitarian nightmare. Plus that would piss Trump off so there's that.
Hear the green uniformed guard tell him about the "watchtowers" to spot if anyone in there got rowdy? Surprised there isn't a fire hose in evidence to blast them good when that happens.
I hope when this is over, and it will be, that we track down, charge and punish every single member and every cruel act of this lawless administration even if we have to double both the size of the Judiciary and the statute of limitations on these crimes.
hlthe2b

(47,649 posts)Just trying to analyze what was going on in his head, if anything. I don't think anyone here at DU would ever come to Pence's defense.
I think you misread what the poster was saying.
hlthe2b
(102,419 posts)Given it is re: Pence, I don't think it worth any of our time--not even the effort it would take to spit on him, IMO. Someone somewhere surely will, though, and I hope to see it. May it be from his finally wizened and disillusioned fellow fundamentalists.
PatSeg
(47,649 posts)The day will come when we won't even remember his name. Honestly, I often forget he is part of the administration.
Ligyron
(7,639 posts)I hate that charlatan as much as anyone else here but looking back I can see how my post pondering his choices in facial expression might be taken to be some sort of defense. It is not.
The last sentence in my post describes exactly what I hope will happen both to him and every other enabler of this lawless administration.
I hope this post clarifies my loyalty to the Democratic cause. Peace.
PatSeg
(47,649 posts)I read it as the way you seem to have intended it. Being it is so rare for Pence to ever have a real facial expression, it is understandable that we might be interested in what lies behind it, if anything. The man has the emotional range of an android.
Still, it could have just been an unavoidable reaction to the smell!
PatSeg
(47,649 posts)it was hard to say what lay behind the look. Of course, the smell alone could have caused it. Actually I am surprised they even allowed cameras. It was hardly a photo-op.
It is true, that he could hardly smile and wave, though that worked for Trump whenever he visited disaster areas, waving and telling people to have a good time.
Yes, all those responsible should be held accountable, but I am not optimistic about that, especially after the Bush years. Hopefully, this time it will be different.

(2,698 posts)Pence is observing not people being treated brutally and suffering from dire conditions that he and his "President" might help, but as a politician invited to see an overcrowded zoo.
He is observing, not human beings, but animals in an over crowded cage. "Tsk, tsk," he might be saying. "Those poor beasts. I hope something can be done about that. Something should be done about it. Maybe thinning the herd?"
And the warden might counter with a simple "We have not yet received authorization for that, Mr. Vice President."
I used to believe everyone had a heart and soul. I no longer believe that everyone has a heart and soul. I see with my own eyes the degree of callous indifference displayed by Pence. I see with my own eyes and hear with my own ears the barely contained contempt Trump has for the people he has decided he could treat so barbarically, so brutally, and get away with it, even gain in popularity and make more secure his hold on the "poorly educated" and unthinking anal cysts comprising his base. And, yes, I see those ambulatory anal cysts walking, talking, breeding. At rallies denouncing non-whites. On FOX misrepresenting every utterance of compassion, every call for a restoration of human sympathy and care, as a call for a communist/muslim revolution to take away their fu*king guns.
At 73, I hope only to live at least long enough to see enough of us Americans vote into office genuine human beings who will begin the arduous task of house cleaning and restoring America's national presence as one worthy of respect and admiration. I do have that much hope left, but I'm somehow afraid that even if 2020 does give victory to the people, it may be a futile transition, the taking of the helm after the Titanic has already collided with the iceberg.

(5,106 posts)As a contemporary, I've had the same thought in my mind for a good while.

(34,139 posts)Pence never looked directly at any of the men in that cage. He looked over their heads, to one side or another, down as the border patrol man spoke to him. But he never LOOKED in the faces of the refugees who are being held in such inhumane conditions.

(63,221 posts)And the look on Pence's face is an outrage. How dare he call himself a Christian when he coldly glares at these people who have done nothing wrong (other than being brown), who are suffering and who have been deprived of their rights, with his arms folded, clearly giving off the vibe that he is resentful that he even has to be there.
Not one ounce of empathy or compassion. His soul is hollow. God, how I despise these false "Christians" who try to portray themselves as morally superior when in reality they are filled with nothing but hatred for anyone who isn't exactly like them.

That video tells us everything we need to know about Mike Pence and his version of Christianity. Im so disgusted by people who act like theyre holier than thou but dont do a damn thing but judge others.

I guess Pence thinks it would be all right to treat Jesus like that.

(10,252 posts)I think that I can speak for many here on DU that Pence's self-righteous and hippocritical faux Christian masquerade is especially offensive to decent people everywhere. I grew up in the Episcopalian Church, although I'm now a practicing Buddhist, but I still remember many Bible stories and parables. What comes to mind when I view that video is the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37.
Jesus said: A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.
36 Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?
37 The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him.
Jesus told him, Go and do likewise.
What many people don't get is how despised were the Samaritans of Jesus' day. Also traditionally descended from Abraham through Esau and Hagar. But they worshipped idols, didn't keep the sabbath, ate unclean food, and were uncircumcised. The holier-than-thou priest and Levite pretend not to notice the man who was mugged and beaten. Yet it is the despised Samaritan, who shows compassion.
This one video of sanctimonius Mike Pence turning his back on suffering people turns my stomach. I hope his grave stone says something to the effect: "He turned his back on suffering men."

WHY are we not rising en masse and demanding impeachment, an end to this horror? I'm calling my Senators every day about it. My Rep. is a member of the 'freedom' caucus, so he's hopeless. But the Senators, not so much. I urge all of you to call your US Senators and Representative daily until this crisis is past.
