Jennifer Araoz says she was 14 years old when a young woman approached her outside her New York City high school in the fall of 2001.
The woman was friendly and curious, asking Araoz personal questions about her family, her upbringing, their finances. Soon she began talking to Araoz about a man she knew who was kind and wealthy and lived nearby.
His name, the woman said, was Jeffrey Epstein.
The first few times she went to Epstein's Manhattan townhouse, all they did was talk, Araoz said, and the friendly woman came along. Araoz told him about her dream of becoming a Broadway actress and about her father, who had died of AIDS when she was 12.

But on Araoz's first visit without the woman, Epstein gave her a tour of his mansion that culminated in a visit to what he described as his "favorite room in the house," Araoz said. A massage table sat on the floor. A painting of a nude young woman hung from the wall.
Araoz would return to that room regularly over the next year, she said, manipulated into stripping down to her panties and giving Epstein massages that ended with him pleasuring himself to completion and her leaving with $300
In the fall of 2002, Epstein pressured her to do more, Araoz said. He told her to remove her panties. Then he grabbed her 15-year-old body.
"He raped me, forcefully raped me," Araoz told NBC News in an exclusive interview. "He knew exactly what he was doing."
"I was terrified, and I was telling him to stop. 'Please stop,'" Araoz, now 32, added.

(115,869 posts)Were they absent, clueless, complicit or what? This article says this girl's father had died, but was her mother even aware of the visits to Epstein's mansion? From the questions the woman (Epstein's so-called associate) asked, it sounds to me like they were looking for girls whose family situations made them more vulnerable and more easily enticed (maybe not a lot of money, parents working all the time, making it harder to keep track of the child's activities). I know how my parents would have reacted (Me: Hey, mom and dad, there's this rich guy who'll give me $300 just to give him a massage and he said he'd help me become an actress! Parents: Oh, hell no, you're not doin' that!) But what if the parents didn't know? I have to think they didn't or they'd have put a stop to it. It's so easy to take advantage of kids.

(8,774 posts)Could have been an after school thing. Mom probably worked. I think she was originally singled out because of her beauty and then the recruiter got close to her to see show supervised she was.

(115,869 posts)I can't imagine a parent knowingly letting their 14-year-old kid give massages to some old rich guy for money. The kid would probably be too naive to know what she's really getting into, but she was probably cautioned not to mention it to mom because she'll want to know where you got the money and, well, you know what spoilsports parents can be, etc.
