There is a town out here that is an island...

No bridges, just ferries.

Once was a time when the local police set up checkpoints at the ferry landings, and when they caught unlicensed farmworkers driving off the boat, they issued a cheap summons and called the farmer to come get his truck. The point wasn't to catch farmworkers, but to catch inspection stickers and other violations, and the farmworkers were just caught in the net.

Just about all the farmworkers have been Hispanic for years, and some farmers are actually giving up because even their kids don't want to be farmers any more. A number landscapers and farmworkers have started their own businesses and are doing quite well-- with kids who have no problem with the work.

So, one day ICE announced they would "assist" the local police and take any undocumented workers off their hands.

The local police then decided that there was no point to doing the spot checks any more.
