(8,419 posts)That's how we roll in SoCal! (pun intended)
A team from outside the region then maybe we stop the game.

(11,473 posts)In the late 80s. Giants and As.
And yes smaller earthquakes are basically nothing to locals. I was living few hours from Santa Cruz where that one was centered and all my stuff was swinging and all my daughters porcelain statues broke.

(10,137 posts)And the power went out. It didn't stop the Giants from playing football that weekend - they just moved the game to Stanford.
Earthquakes aren't like fires of floods: there are spots with a lot of damage, but the larger area is not affected much. We used to joke that the headlines after the 1989 quake should have read "Major Earthquake Hits Bay Area: Millions Inconvenienced". Of course, if it's you're house that collapses or you that gets injured, it's a different story, but most people just have minor but annoying damage. (Lost my favorite flowerpot, and I still haven't done anything about some of the cracks in the plaster).
I was at work at the time: my immediate reaction was, there's no power so I might as well go home and watch the series. It wasn't until I heard news reports about part of the Bay Bridge failing that I realized how serious it was.

(8,419 posts)and truly fortuitous. Think about it, any teams other than the A's v Giants and the freeways are packed at 4:55 or 5:05. (whenever it hit) Since it was game 1 of a Series with both team participating, so many residents were already home.

(11,473 posts)From work and my radio went out in my new car and i was banging on it the emergency broadcasting came on and I raced home because my girls preteens were latchkey kids.
They had run to the neighbors and all power was out for days, we had a guy with tiny battery tv giving us the news. He was fearful because his mom worked at Kaiser in Oakland and used the bridge at that time but she was ok.

(36,444 posts)My son lives less than a mile away and he told us he had a scary good ride. I mentioned 'E' ticket ride, and he said, "Huh?".

(36,444 posts)The official had to tell the fans to go home; cranks opened up, but I understand they were mostly superficial.

We are going to the Dodger game tomorrow. The quakes are not affecting Dodger Stadium.
