(143 posts)Experienced many quakes and living in Santa Barbara for 66 years. This was gentile and just a 'B' ticket ride in Lompoc. Rolling quakes, like this one, isn't as newsworthy as what is being broadcast. Had this been anywhere on the southern coast the damage caused by liquefaction from south of San Diego to northern San Luis Obispo county would have been be devastating.
I spent 3 hours in a root cellar in Oklahoma when I was 10 because of a tornado warning, that was much worse than any earthquake I've experienced in California.
All you can do is be prepared. You can't hide from a quake yet but technology is giving us seconds of warning. Go science!
