Very impressive individual.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory named the asteroid after Ocasio-Cortez, while in high school, because she won second place in a global science fair.

(1,725 posts)My husband and I used to BUST IT like this!!!! We met each other, dancing at a club (45 years ago) and we always danced to a modern style! This was the best exercise ever and we can still "bust a move". (I'm 72 and he is 63...) WOW! These were GREAT dancers. What a TREAT!

(45,534 posts)People still give me a hard time for having bad jobs in the past, including restaurant dishwasher. It takes a privileged douchebag mind to think that way.

(118,793 posts)cool retail jobs (health food store, book store) and uncool ones. Later in life i found my favourite jobs were dish washing and cashier anywhere. I liked doing $40,000 + in sales at the campus bookstore at the start of term and being right on to the penny. To this day i love doing dishes. I can't wait to do them. Very therapeutic both. Every job matters. AOC is amazing.

(115 posts)Republicans forget when they elected John Boehner a former bartender as speaker of the house.

(7,702 posts)AOC is great if behind the bar with; front-of-the-house, cooks, managers, sanitation workers, housekeeping....
All of which are vital to proper food-service.
Here's a little story for ya;
When I was one of the key chefs at a prestigious hospitality operation, we had one of our biggest customers having an event. The main chef told me to tell the bartender that we needed "a pitcher of beer to steam the the shrimp." So, I dutifully retrieved the beer from the bartender.
Back in the kitchen, I took the beer and began to add it to the boiling water and spices we started to "steam" the shrimp. The chef yelled stop! Then he said; "You put the shrimp in the water, and you drink the beer you idiot!"

(11,744 posts)As well as in our elected leaders. As others have said, she worked real jobs, is smart, pretty well informed, and does not forget where she came from.
Right wingers want to pin her down and define her disparagingly by ONE job that she has held. Even if she was ever only a bartender, she is a damn smart bartender. Why would you even use that as an insult unless you were an elitist? Isn't that what right wingers accuse liberals of all the time? We're elitist because we think education is a good thing. We're elitist because we like to read and stay up to date on things. We're elitist because we think life is about continuous self improvement and we realize that while we will never know everything, we want to try to know as much as we can.
Then they go and show their real hand by knocking a person for holding down a real job as a bartender. They mock a "working stiff" who made good, as if being a bartender means that you don't know anything. They say Democrats hate "real Americans" when they try to shit on a "real American" for having a "real American, non-elitist job". I guess it is a good thing right wingers have no sense of shame or irony or they might be suffering right now.

(34,661 posts)something just reminded me of someone whom I called friend and would what we called in Minnesota,"Go to Coffee with",Senator Paul Wellstone. Remember how certain Dems and every friggin Rethug down right hated his positions. Funny thing,AOC is talking the same positions and Policies.
And I am proud to say,stood next to the man on many a Pickett Line or Community Organizing events.
