Yea. It happened. This is NOT "The Onion". This shit is getting more RIDICULOUS by the day.

The security officer, who has not been named, demanded that Dukes and his companions walk over to his vehicle parked on the side of the street. The security guard, employed by FHN, then accused Dukes of attempting to steal the hospital equipment, according to Dukes.
He had gotten out of his vehicle and said, What are you going to do, steal that and sell it on eBay? Dukes said. I told him, This machine is pumping fluid into my veins as we speak.

(70,305 posts).....Dukes said once he was arrested, the IV was removed from his arm and his rescue inhaler was seized.
Eventually while I was being transported, I passed out and had a seizure, Dukes said. When I woke up in the back of the car, I had an asthma attack. I didnt get my inhaler until probably four minutes later.
Schroeder said the IV was removed by a professionally-trained FHN employee and that police followed the proper protocol when they realized Dukes was having a medical event.
An ambulance was summoned for him and he was taken back to the hospital, Schroeder said. If we notice an arrestee or detainee is under medical stress, were going to get medical attention for them and thats exactly what officers did in this case.
FHN released the following statement in response to the video: We are looking into this but as of now, it is a police matter.

(4,192 posts)They arrested Dukes on the word of another person who made an assumption about what he saw. Dukes said he was out walking on his doctor's orders. They should have gone to the hospital to ask the doctor. But it's so much easier to act like imbeciles and arrest him. Dukes then passes out due to medical complications.
Imbeciles. Especially the security guard who could have verified with the doctor (he could have avoided all this nonsense by calling to the hospital to find out). And saying this I'm giving wide latitude to these jokers who are unqualified for their jobs. Dukes had the IV in him at the time. He deserved at least the benefit of the doubt.
They must have been blinded by his black skin. It often causes loss of reasoning and understanding in racists. All these cops are showing symptoms. Not one of them said, maybe they should call his doctor before taking his IV out.
The article stated the police said Dukes was "uncivil" and charged him with "disorderly conduct". I'll believe that when I see a video of Dukes being "uncivil" before the police came. If they can't manage a situation with a man with an IV in his arm and wearing a hospital gown, dragging a big machine around on coasters, then what good are they.
In their defense, maybe they were afraid Dukes was going to run away and they wouldn't be able to catch him.

(101,361 posts)in the hospital he works in, and clearly have an IV in. I'd be swearing, calling him an idiot, and, if I were black and he white, I'd be calling him a racist too, because it's the obvious conclusion.
They put his life at risk. They should be sacked, and he deserves compensation.

(313 posts)In the land where cops shoot and strangle people to death and then get off in court, I guess taking someone's IV, that they are clearly using at that time, doesn't seem to be such a big thing.
Outrageous.
These actions must be punished, and punished severely, so that police think twice before committing such hate crimes.

(62,448 posts)the trouble of dressing in a fucking hospital gown so he could make the theft of the IV stand look less suspicious? Now, that is some kind of planning for stealing an IV stand.
ETA - and he stuck an IV line into his arm to look less suspicious?
Methinks this cop won't be heading to the detective job.

Clear case of driving an illegal IV cart while black...........
I can imagine any citizen reacting very negatively to the absurdity of this event, and then the city (real) cops followed up with even more crazy shit and arrested everyone in sight (three total). Cooler heads did not prevail.
Let's hope FHN and City of Freeport are both called to account.......
