I always start these posts with a pitch for DUers to log on and make a quick, however small, donation to ACLU (in addition to your chosen DEM candidates, Planned Parenthood, Sierra Club or other important causes). ACLU has just won a landmark case against Trump's illegal $$ grab to build the Wall, have won against these horrific anti-woman anti-choice laws, the Muslim travel bans, and of course are working hard to protect rights for immigrants along the border. Give 'em your $ if you can and a few minutes of your time when they send their periodic surveys. End pitchLink to tweet

(23,156 posts)DeSantis and the other Fl asshole repugs just overturned the wishes of 65% of the state of FL by adding this illegal and blatant attempt at poll rigging by making it so that poor people can't vote. They charge outrageous speeding fines, fines for going to court for not being able to pay speeding fines, where they add on more fines and issue bench warrants - all for the sin of having a car and being poor. If you get pick up n taken to jail for this, it's a misdemeanor, probation, and more fines. Probation says you have to work, but also have to be able to drop everything and come to them when they call, whether or not you are still working, so people either lose their jobs or fail to keep the appointments. So called justice is all bout $$ for the state and that's pretty much it, so now people can't vote because their car had a broken tail light and they're poor. I really hate the PTB in this state, they are ll RW Russian Repugs and are anti-worker, anti-poor and pro rich and white straight men only. Hope the ACLU wins big.

(17,019 posts)there is no central place they can check to see if all fines have been paid as they are handled by each court. So someone who was released 20 years ago may not remember if they paid every penny. Some fines are converted to liens on property that would have to be paid off and then the title cleared before one could vote.
