Breaking News: Chick-fil-A Removing Dyes, Corn Syrup and TBHQ in 2014: Read and share this breaking news here ABC NEWS
The changes come after blogger Vani Hari wrote a post in 2011 titled Chick-fil-A or Chemical Fil-A? on her site, FoodBabe.com. It noted that the chains sandwich had nearly 100 ingredients, including peanut oil with TBHQ, a chemical made from butane. Hari, based in Charlotte, N.C., continued writing about Chick-fil-As ingredients. Then last year, the company invited her to its headquarters to spend the day talking with executives. They took my concerns and started developing a road map of how to address them, Hari said. On Wednesday, she said she was notified about the changes in an email from the company.

(8,731 posts)"It helps ... produce the air within the foam of a yoga mat," said Hari. "It does the same thing for bread."
"The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon," Subway said in a statement. The company said the move had nothing to do with the protest and that it was "already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts."
But Vani Hari, the activist blogger who takes credit for the removal of yellow dyes in at least three of Kraft's Mac & Cheese products for children, was declaring victory after she had been researching the company's bread ingredients since 2012.

(3,803 posts)It has been extensively studied since the late 1960s, and no legitimate study has found any problems caused by the amounts of MSG typically added to food.
If this is surprising to you (as it was to me when I first looked into it about 10 years ago), start your search on the "Safety" part of the Wikipedia web page for MSG: Safety
However, that ingredient list includes a number of truly horrifying shit that I would not want to consume on a daily basis, but MSG should be no cause for alarm.

Even though I know that individual stores and store owners may not feel the same way the Founder and current corporate heads do (One local one in particular that opened on a sunday just to donate food to first responders at the Pulse shooting), they still pay franchise fees to them and the home office uses some of that money to support shit I don't so I won't eat there.

Im just amazed at the number of folks here who rationalize spending money at a business that is explicitly bigoted and right wing because they like the food. There is better food in a vending machine, but even so, if your principles end at your taste buds, you are lying to yourself about being progressive.
Im new to DU (although Ive read it a long time). Im sort of amazed at how many apparently right wing members there are here who pretend to be liberal.

I don't think the liberalism is a pretense, it's simply that many people hold benign opinions that differ from yours.
Were we all of us to honestly dictate all the habits of our lives publicly, none would be so liberal as we'd like... especially ourselves, even if we pretend differently.

The food is a small step above McDonalds and that ilk, but IMHO is not all that special. I mean, the menu is 100% chicken, which means they don't have to come up with good tasting versions of other types of meats, which helps them if one wants chicken.
What they DO, they do pretty good, for the price. To me they're like the In-And-Out of Chicken, albeit with a bit more variety in the way of soups, salads and wraps and such.
For not much more at all, you can go to Smashburger or Habit (if you have them in your area) and it's WAY better, even their chicken ... IMHO.

(11,917 posts)We stop there sometimes when traveling. My kids love their peach milkshakes. Those, a salad, and unsweet tea make it a safe quick place to stop for a diabetic or low-carber.

(8,731 posts)It's Republican food - they love the chemicals. I know Food Babe got them to take the Yellow food coloring out. Their food is loaded with ingredients many people have allergic reactions to. Their milkshakes have surfur dioxiide and many people have severe reactions to this additive, including me - my throat closes. The nuggets have MEGA MSG - not a suitable food for a kid.
Ingredients
Icedream (whole milk, sugar, nonfat dry milk, artificial flavor, corn starch, mono & diglycerides, microcrystalline cellulose, carrageenan, guar gum, Yellow 5 & 6), milkshake base (whole milk, sugar, cream, whey powder milk, nonfat dry milk, artificial flavor, disodium phosphate, mono and diglycerides, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, guar gum, cellulose gum, carrageenan), whipped cream (cream, milk, sugar, sorbitol, nonfat milk solids, artificial flavor, mono and diglycerides, carrageenan, polysorbate 80, mixed tocopherols [vitamin E] to protect flavor, propellant: nitrous oxide), cherries, (high fructose corn syrup, water, potassium sorbate [a preservative], sodium benzoate [a preservative], citric acid, artificial flavor, FD&C Red #40, sulfur dioxide [a preservative]).

(33,643 posts)And consuming LARGE amounts in one meal can cause headaches for some people.
But it's not worse for you than salt if you're not someone sensitive to it or don't consume mass quantities.
womanofthehills
(8,731 posts)As researchers, we don't yet know what percentage of the population is sensitive to MSG. But we do know enough to confirm that the amino acid glutamate, when in its free form (i.e., when it is not bound to a full protein like meat) causes negative reactions in certain people. An individual's reaction to MSG is not limited to Chinese Restaurant Syndrome (CRS), which is characterized by symptoms like headache, sweating, rapid heartbeat and tightness in the chest. These symptoms usually occur within minutes of eating the compound, often while the diner is still in the restaurant.
In my research on the effects of MSG in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome and the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia, I observed headache (including migraine), diarrhea, gastrointestinal pain and bloating, extreme fatigue, muscle pain and cognitive dysfunction all of which improved when subjects were put on a diet low in free glutamate, and which returned with re-introduction of MSG. (This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study). In contrast to CRS, symptoms in fibromyalgia patients tend to begin somewhat later, hours after ingestion, making it more difficult for these people to identify the food-related trigger.
Other researchers are studying the potential effects of MSG on conditions like migraine, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD/TMJ), obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recently found an association between high consumption of MSG and the prevalence of overweight adults in China. Understandably, the glutamate industry is hotly contesting these and other findings related to MSG and obesity. Consumers should know that the glutamate industry funded the majority of studies "proving" the safety of MSG. Independent scientists have not always agreed with those findings.

Everyman Jackal
(271 posts)We moved here because we had nephews that were Marines at LeJeune and now we have grand-nephews stationed there when they aren't deployed. This is really a good place to live if you are a veteran. I used to wear my DAV cap when we ate out but stopped. It got embarrassing asking for the check and finding out that some Marine had already paid it. We try to treat them, especially when you see a family and you can tell the ones that just got home. I know it shouldn't make a difference but it does bother me more to see a female veteran wearing prosthetics. The best thing about living here is I have a disabled veteran's plate on my car. I have never got a ticket yet and that includes the time I went through the old town at 65 MPH in a 15 MPH zone. Before the town cop could say anything I told him and I told him the truth that I had just left the VA clinic and had to go to the VA office. He told me that the office was down 2 blocks on the left so I should slow down. Really, a veteran especially one with problems should live in a military town. We help each other. I saw a veteran with a service dog and a t-shirt that basically said to leave him alone. I walked up to him and told him that I had gotten out of Fayetteville, meaning the psych ward at the VA hospital, the day before. He understood what I meant and we shook hands and sat and talked for a while. It was good for both of us. Wasn't the same when I lived in Boston or Miami. Okay, that's enough crying in my beer.

There was one in the mall where I worked while in college. I noticed they closed on Sundays and remarked to a colleague that at least they gave their employees that day off. The colleague informed me the impetus was based in a "the Bible says don't work on Sunday" ethos.
At first I shrugged it off. I thought their sandwiches were good but they were notably more expensive than other fast food places. As I thought about it, I realized they were using what was supposed to be a personal spiritual belief as a marketing tool, no different than an air conditioner repairman who puts a "Jesus fish" on his advertising.
I didn't want to support that and this was during a time when I still retained residue of my family's religious beliefs. I didn't care that they were Christian but their willingness to exploit that for dollars was distasteful to me.
I didn't go back for that reason. Being in the buckle of the Bible Belt, I was surrounded by more fervent supporters who fell for their act. After the 2012 fallout over their same-sex marriage stance, their crowds increased exponentially around here. Not me.
Not long after that, I was passenger on a road trip with my highly conservative sister and brother-in-law when they insisted on finding a Chik-fil-A to stop for something to eat. "We like supporting them because of the values they show," they quickly offered. I said nothing.
I ordered as little as possible, held my tongue while they insisted on praying over their fast food in the restaurant and said little else during the meal. That's been seven years ago and I gladly have abstained since then.
