the first action must be to add two, three, or four justices to the Supreme Court. (Liberal justices.)
And the second action must be to send Trump, Cheney and Bush Jr. to the Hague to stand trial for crimes against humanity.
Any suggestions for the third action?

(62,276 posts)We need more than 435 congresspeople, we need something like 550-600 and that's being conservative there. The United States is being run like it's 1913. It's untenable.

(94,642 posts)Court Packing is an easy "fix" that then allows the Republicans to immediately do the same thing when they get back into office.
You can't send Trump or anyone else to the ICC because the US (including the Obama Administration) doesn't recognize it's jurisdiction, and because even if we did, none of them are facing "crimes against humanity" charges.
Feel free to now resume your rant.

(15,043 posts)Republicans to get back in power to fuck us some more.
The Republicans would pack the court in a heart beat. Why shouldn't we? Because we're afraid of what they'll do when they regain power? Okay, here's my answer to that. The current Republican Party is a criminal organization and should be treated as such. After WWII, Germany outlawed the Nazi Party. We should outlaw the Republican Party in it's present form. They've put us on the edge of fascism, so what more should be needed to put them out of power permanently?
And since (at least) a two party system is necessary for democracy, we should help build a new Republican Party with those who walked away from Trump as the base of that party.
As for us not having recognized the Hague, RECOGNIZE IT. And then send Trump, Cheney and Bush Jr. to stand trial there.
Those are my answers. Let's hear yours. What do you think a Democratically controlled White House and Senate should do first to begin repairing the damage that Republicans have done over the past four decades, and especially the past 2 1/2 years?

(5,558 posts)Packing the court is short sighted for the reasons mentioned. It will backfire whenever the right eventually has power again. We won't have control forever, and honestly I don't think I'd want to live under a single party state very long term, power corrupts. Same for abolishing the legislative filibuster in the Senate.
My long term fix is to raise the confirmation bar for SCOTUS judges to 3/4ths by both the house and Senate, making it essentially impossible to have anyone put on the court without strong bipartisan backing. Also the president and Congress would be required to remain in Washington and in session until the vacancy is filled, and also barred from all fundraising and campaign activities during this period. no dragging it out.
Lower judges would require 2/3rds in both.

(56,828 posts)in the Senate for appointing judges and other federal nominees - limited debate and fast-tracking them through without filibuster - at least until the courts are at a level expected after Democrats having the presidency for 16 of the previous 28 years (8 years of Bill Clinton, 8 years of Bush, then 8 years of Obama and 4 years of Trump).
Not just for Merrick Garland, but also for all the other judicial nominees that were slowed to a crawl under Obama. (not to mention under Bill Clinton)

(15,043 posts)We've played by the rules long enough. Especially considering that we were up against a criminal Republican Party that ignored the rules, the Constitution, and common decency.
No one should look at this as "pay back." It's a reckoning, pure and simple.
