Her mentioning of the fact that people have to pay to play sports. Really Ann, I wonder why that happened. Could it possibly be that selfish rich people like you refuse to pay taxes to support schools? Simply amazing. Refuse to spend money on schools and then have audacity to complain over athletic fees. Wow, just wow.

You have give her credit, she knows the non-rich republicans are glued to their sports. NASCAR, NFL, NBA, Baseball and the Soccer Moms.

(24,411 posts)...the fact that school fees are inconsequential to a family with a $500,000,000 net worth. Ann Romney complains about school fees when they are meaningless to her but budget-busting to the majority of Americans. And furthermore, the Americans who are affected by student fees are punished by Romney's policy's and schemes that hurt senior citizens and further destroy the middle class.
She shouldn't even pretend to care about these matters because her husband clearly has contempt for anyone who feels the sting of school fees.

(51,744 posts)1. The economy has been so bad that "women have wondered whether to have children."
Um, under your husband's administration, women would not even have the CHOICE. Oh, and if Republicans had not stripped the safety net and shipped jobs overseas, moms would not be so reticent. But it's hard to raise a kid on a Walmart clerk's wages.
2. "Mitt's company [Bain, which she never referred to by name!] allowed us to give our sons the opportunity for a good education."
Yeah, so unless you own a multi-million dollar vulture capital firm, your kid ain't gonna get an opportunity for a good education. Cuz we cut public education to shreds. Ha Ha. Oh, and ironically, all that money Mitt made from his-company-that-we-shall-not-name? Yeah, he made it by plundering other companies that actually built stuff, devastating their employees' ability to send their kids to college.

(14,061 posts)It seems that nobody wants to support schools. The attitude seems to be, "I raised my kids, I'm done, I don't want to pay anymore." I overheard such a conversation between two senior citizens the other week. Of course, all their comments were prefaced with how well the schools served THEIR kids back in the day, but now, well...it's just too expensive, and a lot of things schools offer nowadays are frills. Bullshit.
One thing they mentioned was sports, and the building of sports facilities. The thing is, more often than not, a lot of these facilities are built with **donated** money. (Now, whether that shows good priorities is another discussion for another day.) And when people turn down levies based on this misconception, they are deeply affecting bus services, staffing, education for special needs kids, etc. But they don't see that because they only see what they want to see.
The flat-out ignorance in this country is appalling. I'm surprised that the inside of my mouth wasn't bleeding from biting on it to keep me from setting these two women straight -- and as the parent of two special needs kids, I could have said PLENTY.
Schools are such a low priority anymore that it's really no wonder why we are falling behind the rest of the world.

(8,225 posts)But when I started public school, you walked in and they handed you everything you needed, books, pens, pencils, paper, the art class had paints and materials, the music classes provided instruments for a small deposit. I am sure taxes funded it all.
Today we pay less taxes, but there are school supply lists which include not only the basics but stuff like tissues and hand soap. There are places to donate school supplies for the poor and massive drives to collect them, and every damn thing has a fee.
If you can pony up the cash, you kids can still get the sort of an education that I got +/- for free. I could afford to live in the best local school district and pony up the extra costs and fees, so my kids did just fine. My kids ended up with scholarships and fellowships, others go to community colleges on their own dime.
Rmoney reminds me of an ex-brother-in-law from decades ago. Interestingly, he was the privledged child of a wealthy family (from MA)worth millions. He was given ownership of a few apartment complexes for his 21st birthday. He was not allowed to manage them, and as best as I could tell, pretty much not allowed to even visit them (not that he would have been so inclined). He just got a monthly profit check from the professional management that ran them.
He once told me (after a drink or two) that he "could not imagine how anyone could possibly live on less than X dollars a year". I replied that I seemed to be alive, but had never to that time made half that much money. His jaw dropped.... Rmoney

kids whose parents cannot afford them and to fill those backpacks with all those required school supplies that they can't afford to buy.
We also have funds set up where people can contribute to help pay fees for kids who want to be in band, to be in sports, to go on field trips, or to participate in other extracurricular activities like theater or debate, but whose parents cannot afford the extra fees.
Even bus rides for kids who live too far to walk or ride to school now cost. If a kid lives less than 2.5 miles from school, the district says he or she can walk or ride a bike, so that the district isn't required to provide transportation. But there are few sidewalks in our city, and besides, even where we do have sidewalks, most kids would have to cross busy intersections and some would even have to walk or bike along the highway at least part of the time to get to school. Furthermore, young kids walking alone at 7:00, 7:30, or 8:00 in the morning are in danger of being kidnapped.
If a parent has more than one kid, she can end up paying incredible fees just to have her kids ride a bus to school. These fees especially hit impoverished single mothers. One woman had to pay $230 a semester for each of her four sons to ride the bus to school! That was an extra $1,820 per year for a single mother working minimum a wage job! (Her story was featured in our local rag when those bus fees were first instituted several years ago.)

(8,225 posts)When people think of obscenity they focus on sex. The greater obscentiy rarely gets notice and is almost never termed obscene.
When you think of a person spending their time working hard at a Wal Mart and still needing for food stamps to eat and tax subsidy to afford a roof over their heads, this is the greater obscenity. When a person working hard at minimum wage has to shell out many hard earned dollars to get her kids safely to school, this is the greater obscenity.
