Faith leaders and anti-abortion groups are ramping up their efforts to reelect President Trump, rewarding a president who has become an unlikely hero of the Christian right because of his commitment to socially conservative causes.
The Faith and Freedom Coalition will spend tens of millions of dollars on a voter mobilization effort that aims to register 1 million Christians in key battleground states and reach 30 million people nationwide.
The group, which is led by conservative activist Ralph Reed, will pump literature into more than 100,000 churches across 18 states, primarily focusing on the presidential battlegrounds but also with an eye on contested House and Senate races.
The Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List, an anti-abortion rights group, has a budget of $41 million this campaign cycle to expose the extremism of Trumps opponents, among other initiatives.
SBA List will pay more than 1,000 canvassers in eight battleground states with the aim of knocking on 4 million doors. The group will partner with local churches and anti-abortion groups in states such as North Carolina, Florida, Iowa, Michigan and Arizona to turn out conservative voters for Trumps reelection.

(50,560 posts)Once we impeach and try the bastard, or at least try him, his sentence needs to be having himself and all his sycophants put into pillories...once there, people can pay $5 to punch a Cabinet member in the mouth, $10 to punch a Senator, $20 to punch Pence and $50 to punch Trump, all proceeds going to paying off the costs this administration ran up.

(10,024 posts)Look, I understand many of the Evangelical leaders supporting Trump. They are in it for power, fame, control, and money (just like Trump)...but one would think some of their followers would realize they are being played for fools.

(108,980 posts)The new translation is much more in keeping with the spirit of the original, as well as with the rest of Christian scripture.

(1,480 posts)We don't have any "originals." Modern doctrines didn't even come about until the 4th Century.
Does the Pope speak Greek? Or Aramaic?

The French version of the Lord's Prayer is close to this new English translation.

(1,480 posts)contrary to hundreds of years of accepted English translations. (And he doesn't speak English, either.)
If I was in a doctrinal argument with you and did something like that, you'd tell me I was wrong. I'm saying he is wrong.
There are other verses that talk about not falling into temptation. This is not one of them.

(108,980 posts)I trust the Pope's advisors more than yours. (And I don't see any evidence that that writer has any knowledge of the languages of the Bible. Her argument is simply that that translation has been used for a long time, so -- regardless of whether it is the most accurate -- it should never be changed.)

(1,480 posts)I just grabbed the first source I could find so that I didn't come across as just resting on my own opinion. I think more scholars will weigh in on this as time goes on....
This has been fun, but I think the thread doesn't belong here. My original comment was meant as a response to someone else.
Thanks.

(108,980 posts)You apparently don't realize that there are many Catholics on DU who hate Trump as much as anyone here -- as opposed to Evangelicals who support Trump and the R's by 75% (to 22% for D's).
And the writer you cite has little awareness of how many English translations there have been over the centuries. The second article includes just some of them.
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/11/07/how-religious-groups-voted-in-the-midterm-elections/
The 2018 exit polls show a slight shift in Catholic voting patterns compared with recent midterm elections. This year, Catholic voters were evenly split between the parties: 50% favored the Democratic candidate for Congress in their district, while 49% favored the GOPs nominee. . . .
Among Protestants, 56% voted for Republican congressional candidates and 42% backed Democrats. Among those who identify with faiths other than Christianity and Judaism (including Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and many others), 73% voted for Democratic congressional candidates while 25% supported Republicans.

New English Bible 1961
Our Father in heaven, thy name be hallowed;
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us.
And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one.
Good News for Modern Man: Todays English Version 1966
Our Father in heaven: May your name be kept holy,
May your Kingdom come, May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need;
Forgive us the wrongs that we have done,
As we forgive the wrongs that others have done us;
Do not bring us to hard testing, but keep us safe from the Evil One
New American Bible 1970
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread,
and forgive us the wrong we have done as we forgive those who wrong us.
Subject us not to the trial but deliver us from the evil one.
The New Revised Standard Version 1989
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

(1,480 posts)Don't know how you got that idea. This is why it's so difficult to address religion in this country.
No offense meant. Sorry I mentioned it.

(115,735 posts)They care more about their pet social issues - abortion, anti-LGBT laws, guns - than what Jesus actually commanded them to do, like feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, caring for the sick, etc. IIRC, he actually said you'd go to Hell if you didn't do those things (Matthew 25), but they still care more about protecting their guns, persecuting LGBT people and immigrants, and depriving women of their reproductive rights (none of which Jesus ever mentioned). So I guess they'll go to Hell, but that doesn't help us much right now.
