In each of the past four years, 1,000 or more immigrant children who arrived at the southern U.S. border without their parents have reported being sexually abused while in government custody, according to federal records released Tuesday.
The data from the Department of Health and Human Services was made public by Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., before a congressional hearing on the Trump administration's policy of separating migrant families.
Deutch said the government's 135 migrant shelters are "an unsafe environment."
"Together these documents detail an environment of systemic sexual assault by staff on unaccompanied children," he said.
"The federal Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is in charge of caring for under-age immigrants, received more than 4,500 allegations of sexual abuse and sexual harassment between 2015 and 2018. The reporting begins under the Obama administration. Of those complaints, some 1,300 were serious enough to refer to the FBI, but an official says 'the vast majority' proved to be unfounded.

(60,010 posts)I found it hopeful that the Inspec. General Report said some Border Patrol employees have quit, asked for transfer or took early retirement.
Wish there were a way to find some of them and get info.
Of course, the problem then is that those who are comfortable doing the job, are the ones who do the most damage.

(12,660 posts)....the assaults is what makes the number of victims skyrocket.
If no one in the system takes responsibility or cares enough to screen for abusers and power-hungry perverts -or follow through on reporting and remediation of violations as soon as those violations occur, you can't be surprised that such atrocities happen on a regular basis.
"The Man" only cares about the status quo and control over privileges. Those in charge don't care about the niceties of, say, following the law, having ethics, or taking responsibility in doing both a good job and the right thing....
It's all about being in charge and getting as much stuff as they can. Not about being a human being.
The system encourages the proliferation of mindless drones.

So the ones who are not bothered by abusing immigrants remain.
