I think that in certain instances, religion can uplift, if it is used as inspiration; but as an organizational structure in the hands of men (and I have to say literally men unfortunately) it has been used as a method of coercion, control, and profit for those at the top. It isn't so much religion (though the structure lends itself to authoritarianism) as it is conservatism and the desire to remain in power.

You are absolutely correct that if Melania were President Obama's wife, or any other Democratic politician's, the conservative religious people would be in an uproar about how "ungodly, dirty, disgusting, etc..." she was.

For many people who identify as "Christian" the tenets of the religion are not as important as being on the side that is in power. A lot of those people feel like their way of thinking, their superiority, and their traditions are being challenged even as they so often fail to live up to those traditions.
