(9,833 posts)converted into a memorial or monument to those who were exterminated. We were the only people there that day. I don't remember all of the details--I was only 10 yrs. old, but I do remember feeling sad, afraid, and sick. My sister said that there were crates full of ashes in the chambers where the ovens were housed. I remember the cremetory and the ovens and the barracks. I also remember that it was a chilly, blustery Spring day with clouds blowing across the sun creating patterns of shadow and light that I imagined were angels of death.
My parents were both WWII veterans. They met and married in Germany after the war. They saw what war did to people of Germany and Europe and did everything they could to educate their children to the damages caused by ignorance, hatred and greed. We travelled all over Europe. There was still a lot of rubble in those days. Hell, the Berlin Wall was built while we lived there.
My sister and I toured the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. We both had strong reactions to many of the exhibits, but none so visceral as the shoes...

The Vietnam War Memorial in DC was depressing enough for me. I didn't need to expose myself to the Nazi horrors.

(1,429 posts)I have delayed for decades the responsibility to record my memories of meeting survivors, of having them as neighbors and my 11 year old sister showing her bravery in 1949. Her teacher told the class the Holocaust did not happen. She came home asked for and received the photos an uncle had taken of a Holocaust camp, returned to school and challenged the teacher by showing the photos.
Now is the time to record and leave for the next generations the history.

Clinton has a child slave ring under a pizzaria in New York? How horrible of her! (as if in any sort of real world that could possibly be true; but they want it to be true.)
They shouldn't take rosaries, of all things. Looks like they confiscate everything. A sad situation.

Anything can be falsified or photoshopped. The Democrats have truth on its side. We need to be able to rely on the information presented here, IMO.

(6,556 posts)People in a bad place use their religious beliefs, including Bibles and rosaries, to help them deal with the horrific things happening to them. It is in effect a form of mind control(abuse) by those doing the oppressive acts. Keep in mind, this is the United States government doing this! We pay for this government, and by doing nothing we are supporting what is done in our name. I am totally disgusted with what this nation is becoming under the tRump administration, and with the apathy of the American people.

(34,136 posts)Away - at least most of it. I can't imagine that every single valuable goes in the trash. I'd bet some ends up in the border patrol agents' pockets.
I will not argue against checking for items that could be contraband - but Bibles and rosaries? Wallets and purses - with documents the people will need to establish their identities?
These are people with only what they can carry - next to nothing - and even that is being taken away.

(9,685 posts)This photograph, showing a collection of rosaries taken from migrants trying to enter the US, has been going viral on social media since the crisis at the border became the number one political issue in America.
It shows 43 strings of sacred beads, classified as non-essential by US border agents and thrown into the trash, along with scraps of food and other refuse from a US Customs and Border Patrol processing center in Why, Arizona.

(34,075 posts)The recitation is misleading in other ways, as well.
When immigrants are taken into custody, personal items (including rosaries, wallets, toothpaste, etc.) are seized. They are held for 30 days. The reason these were thrown in the trash is because they were not retrieved within the 30 days because most of the people taken into custody were not released within the 30 days and had no one else available to pick up personal belongings.
We absolutely shoull not be treating immigrants this way - but we also need to be careful not to use Obama-era (and Bush-era) atrocities to prove how nasty Trump is.
Just wow!

Rosaries El Sueno
A collection of rosaries taken from detainees at the US-Mexico border. Tom Kiefer
• A picture of 43 rosaries taken from migrants trying to get into the US in Ajo, Arizona, went viral in the past week as the crisis at the US border intensified.
• The image was actually taken years before, by Tom Kiefer, who used to be a janitor at a US Customs and Border Patrol facility.
• Nonetheless, it became a symbol of what many see as the inhumanity with which migrants are treated at the border.
• The policies under which the rosaries are taken are still in effect today.

Tom Kiefer worked as a janitor and groundskeeper at the US Customs and Border Protection processing facility in Ajo, Arizona.
Its about 40 miles from the US-Mexico border and its where migrants detained by agents at the border await their next step in their either successful or failed journey to the United States. Many will face deportation back home, mostly to Mexico or parts of Central America.
It was sometime in the fourth year when Kiefer, a photographer, started noticing and photographing trends among the items tossed into the trash at the holding facility. Like being processed at jail, migrants are stripped of their personal belongings.

(13,787 posts)They're comparing the box of Buchenwald rings with rosaries taken from would-be immigrants by the U.S. Border Patrol and equating the two.
The thing is, people aren't moved by the Buchenwald rings because it shows that the Nazis stole jewelry,. They're moved because each ring represents a dead Jew, or a dead Jewish family. People hate Nazis for any number of reasons, but stealing jewelry isn't anywhere near the top of the list. The murder of millions of innocent people is.
Look, stealing someone's jewelry is a really shitty thing to do, but it's not the Holocaust.
I think that whoever created this meme, by using the picture of the box of rings, insults the memory of every victim killed at Buchenwald.
