3 July 1988.

The USS Vincennes shoots down a Iran Air Airbus A300 over the Persian Gulf. All 290 passengers abroad the flight are killed, including 66 children. Worst airline disaster in Iranian history.

Did Iran start a war with the US over it?

No.

2. Thanks for pointing out our nations shameless hypocrisy.

We have pissed all over the people of Iran for decades. In addition to the USS Vincennes incident, It was the CIA who overthrew Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953. Mossadegh was a beloved figure in Iran. We then installed the murderous dictator, Shah Reza Pahlavi.

The people of our country have been trained to reflexively blame the Iranians for all the problems in the Middle East. The perspective of the Iranians has been totally neglected in our political discourse and media coverage.

We finally began to crawl out of this stain on our nation by negotiating the Iran nuclear deal during Obama's presidency. Trump couldn't handle a successful deal by Obama so he ripped it up, in spite of the fact that Iran had been complying. What are the chances that Iran will agree to another deal.

The jet was hit while flying over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, along the flight's usual route, shortly after departing Bandar Abbas International Airport, the flight's stopover location. Vincennes had entered Iranian territory after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits

but to NOT start a war over it.

As bad as the disaster was, going to war with the US would have suicide.

(Think about it, IRAN would have had to try to invade us. They can't invite the US into their borders just for the chance to shoot at them)

at a high rate of speed, outside its normal flight path & its transponder was garbled over a military frequency, in truth, the plane was ascending through 12,000 feet at 380 knots within the established commercial air route, and its transponder was squawking the plane’s identity over a civilian channel. This country needs a good dose of humility.
