President Trump is running for reelection as an outsider candidate. But its a knotty challenge for someone who holds the worlds most powerful office.
Trumps speech in Orlando, Fla., on Tuesday, which officially launched his 2020 bid, was rife with rhetoric portraying himself and by extension his supporters as victims of nefarious elites.
The president said that he and his allies were besieged by a permanent political class and an unholy alliance of lobbyists and donors and special interests.
Our patriotic movement has been under assault from the very first day, Trump insisted at one point. Moments before, he told the crowd, the swamp is fighting back so viciously and violently.

I don't know. Take him out to the middle of nowhere. Kick his fat ass out of the limo, lock the doors and see if he can catch up.

(82,849 posts)Why, the media would be on that bogosity like white on rice! They'd flay his rhetorical ploy to portray himself as an outsider, and roast him not only on the nightly news, but on every single cable commentary show! Chuck Todd would blast such nonsense into the stratosphere, and Chris Matthews would blow it to pieces like a skeet shoot as it came back down. The Times and the Post would run front-page editorials consisting solely of LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!
In other words, if Trump began calling himself an outsider, the media would totally fall for it, slavishly repeat each and every syllable, and never betray an ounce of skepticism about it.
