Gabby Giffords tweet; "Speaking is hard for me, but I can't be more clear..."

Gabrielle Giffords ✔ @GabbyGiffords

The House passed the bipartisan background checks bill. Senator McConnell is blocking it.

Today, I’m delivering this letter to McConnell urging him to bring #HR8 or #S42 to a vote.

Speaking is hard for me, but I can’t be more clear: The Senate must pass #BackgroundChecksNow.

In my many years of being a DU follower, I've never Rec'd a posting. Mainly, I think, because you have to log in to do it. Mostly I read the articles and move on. But I'm a gun control voter again in 2020 (along with Healthcare) and this is so dam important.

a bug chunk of the health care expenses we pay for are gun violence related. We drastically need work on both issues.

Thank you, for posting. Many thanks to, to Rep. Giffords for her desire to make things better for the citizens of our country.
I really hope that Sen. McConnell follows her advice. It's makes so much sense to do so.

against every Republican Senator running for re-election:

"Narrator: The House passed the bipartisan background checks bill. Republican Senator Mitch McConnell is blocking it. And {name of incumbent} is enabling him. Mitch McConnell can't be Majority Leader if Republicans are no longer the majority. It's time to send Mitch and {name of incumbent} home. Elect {name of Democrat running against Republican incumbent}.

"Mitch: I get to decide what gets voted on."

This should be used for background checks, healthcare, helping 9/11 victims, DACA kids, etc.

She has experienced what hundreds of adults and children experience every day in this nation. It is time to take action to put on the brakes to this national crime spree. Stop making excuses and start making laws that will protect American citizens from deranged people with uncontrolled access to lethal weapons. The Senate MUST pass, or at least vote on, the background checks bill. NO MORE EXCUSES!

Virginia Tech. At the state level, that shooter was prohibited, but the state hadn't reported the prohibition to the Federal checks system, so NICS came back clean and he got his pistols. That can be addressed with new legislation. (The state of Virginia patched that hole, but it should be federal law.)

At Columbine the guns were obtained illegally. Vegas, they were obtained legally and he passed his background checks. Giffords' would-be assassin wasn't flagged at all, and passed his background check entirely.

I am a gun owner as well, and sure, partisan on this issue, but like Giffords, I actually support Federal UBC, and one step beyond, universal registration. I just think better examples could have been used here. There are serious problems with what checks we do have, and they need to be universal, but they do not apply to all of the shootings cited.
