Always admired the guy. I used to watch him work on the gymnast rings in his back yard (yes he was buffed), and he drove a really cool sports car (to a ten year old).

His son Andy had lots of pets, including a spider monkey that used to like to jump onto my head or shoulder from the trees in the yard and steal my eyeglasses when I was like 10 or 11 years old...try explaining that one to your parents.

I also went to elementary school with the children of the three men killed on Apollo 8, so I have a lot of respect for all of them.

Perhaps you've seen The Whole Earth Catalog.

The iconic photograph, Earthrise, by William Anders, Apollo 8, 1968, was the cover photo of the second and third editions.
