Nothing could more fully represent the ideals we claim to love. The release from bondage should be a time of joyous celebration for all, for when our countrymen are enslaved then we all are, whether we realize it or not.
I also feel movements to make Juneteenth a state holiday should be launched in all the Old South states that still cling so tightly to Lost Cause imagery and memorials. If it's truly "heritage and not hate" then those red state legislators should have no qualm about celebrating the end of slavery.
It costs little to nothing to make a proclamation, to initiate the holiday. If legislators are willing to stand against the celebration of freedom, then they will need to explain why.
