'They were racists' graffitied on Tennessee Confederate monument

A Confederate monument in the middle of a popular Nashville park was vandalized with the words “They were racists” written in red paint.

The monument, which has been in Nashville’s Centennial Park since 1909, was reportedly vandalized overnight Sunday and discovered early Monday, according to local news CBS affiliate WTVF.

The monument was erected to honor Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War and features the names of more than 500 of them inscribed on a plaque that was covered over with the graffiti.

Nashville's Metro Police Department said it would review security footage.

2. What a benign description of the monument's erection and purpose

I was erected by a RACIST organization (Daughters of the Confederacy in all likelihood) to enforce a RACIST version of the history of the Civil War, in the middle of the Jim Crow era. It's purpose was to revise history and enforce the legitimacy of continued oppression.

Tear every one of them down, and blow up Stone Mtn.
