(16,375 posts)He gets a bad rap here but he seems to be doing a very good job. My very liberal daughter works in India on Water Sanitation and Hygiene (abbreviated as WASH) issues, so she's had a lot of experience with his policies. Her NGO includes religious leaders representing every religion in India. She is very positive about Modi's commitment to the environment and says he is far from the right wing Hindu Nationalist he's portrayed as here.

Five years after he was first elected, the economy remains sluggish and the credibility of many of Indias democratic institutions from the judiciary, to the election commission, to the media, and even the countrys central bank, Reserve Bank of India have been compromised.
Yet enough of Indias 900 million voters felt Modi deserved another chance. His victory suggests that the global rightward shift from Donald Trump in the United States and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, to Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines is likely to endure.
Shiv Visvanathan, a social anthropologist and professor at OP Jindal Global University, said that like Russia under Vladimir Putin and the Philippines under Duterte, India under Modi faced a tyranny of the demagogue.
I guess everybodys idea of right wing or liberal is different maybe
Some well tell you trump is doing great things for America

(16,375 posts)Maybe he's too much for the people, though he's not far enough left to be slimed in the normal course of things. It worries me because he is really good on the environment/climate change and that's terrifically important everywhere, but in India especially. My daughter is in the foothills of the Himalayas and the temps there have been close to 120F every day for weeks and weeks.
