Pompeo: Controversy over Trump foreign campaign dirt comments a 'Washington piece of silliness'

BY ZACK BUDRYK - 06/16/19 09:32 AM EDT

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo briefly sparred with Fox News’s Chris Wallace early Sunday over comments from President Trump suggesting he might accept intelligence from a foreign country on a political opponent.

“I came here to talk about foreign policy and this is the third time you’ve asked me about a Washington piece of silliness,” Pompeo told Wallace on “Fox News Sunday” after the host pressed him on Trump’s remarks.

Pompeo accused the press of “chasing down a story that’s inconsistent with what I’ve seen President Trump do every day,” insisting Trump was committed to combating foreign interference in U.S. elections.

In an ABC News interview last week, Trump, asked whether he would accept information from a foreign government or report it to the FBI, said, “I think maybe you do both.”

“I think you might want to listen. There’s nothing wrong with listening," he continued. "It’s not an interference. They have information. I think I’d take it. If I thought there was something wrong, I’d go maybe to the FBI."

Foreign interference in US elections, particularly by unfriendly foreign powers is an assault on our republican (I emphasize lower-case republican here) government and not only thwarts the will of the American electorate and disrupt US governance.

More than a few of us DU’ers are former Cold Warriors and see no valid reason to believe that while meddling by the former Soviet Union was bad, recent meddling by the Russian Federation is now OK Because it benefits the Republican Party. It’s still bad, it’s still criminal, and American politicians who knowingly solicit and accept such assistance should be prosecuted and imprisoned.

I remember right-wingers howling in indignation about Al Gore unknowingly accepting a donation from foreign Buddhist nuns. Putin’s meddling is interference on a far, far larger scale. And to trolling right-Wing “but-but-buts” reading this, your chosen party has left the norms of decency and legality far behind. You choke on gnats while swallowing camels.

Yep, that swamp has been filled to overflowing with greedy people eating crocs who laugh at any feeble attempt to hold them accountable to the law.
