Trump officially starts his 2020 campaign on Tuesday with a rally in Orlando, Florida, and appears to be road-testing some of the themes hell be touching on in the next 18 months, including stoking fear of a market meltdown. Tuesday will be a Big Crowd and Big Day, he said in another tweet.
Research by Macrotrends shows the Dow Jones Industrial Averages performance so far in Trumps term has been middling compared with his predecessors, and trails the gains made under Democrats Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Its a touch above the gains logged under Republicans Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush; George W. Bush had presided over a losing market at this point in his first term.
The benchmark S&P 500 index made a record high in early May before slipping in the face of Trumps stepped-up trade war with China. The more narrow DJIA, whose performance Trump likes to reference, last peaked more than eight months ago, on Oct. 3.

(57,114 posts)Selling the condo and renting a house. The opposite of common wisdom, I know, but let the land lord fix it. If the economy downturns, rents stay stable. If it bounces back we're a couple of years down the road and we're ready for another transition but we've already gotten rid of the condo.

(50,560 posts)I just did a neat little analysis comparing Trump's Dow Jones performance to Obama's at this point in both men's presidencies.
To do it, I used the end-of-week Dow Jones figures on http://www.fedprimerate.com/dow-jones-industrial-average-history-djia.htm
The end of week numbers the week Obama was inaugurated were 8077.56.
At end of week June 17, 2011, it was 12,004.36.
Gain: 48 percent
The end of week numbers the week Trump was inaugurated were 19827.25.
On Friday the Dow was 26,089.61.
Gain: 32 percent
Imagine Trump and Obama climbing a 20,000-foot mountain. (Quit chortling. We're going to pretend Trump can climb a mountain.)
At the end of the week, Trump calls Obama.
"Barack, what altitude did you make it to?"
"Ten thousand feet. Nice climb. Having lots of fun."
Trump then chortles.
"I'm at 18,000 feet. I'm a better climber than you."
Obama clears his throat. "Donald," he said, "I started at sea level. You hired a helicopter to take you to 17,000 feet. There's a difference."
But you will never convince Trump he isn't the greatest in the world.
