While I can recognise that some Americans care not a jot for what goes on in the rest of the world, I think this part of the American psyche is flawed. Isolationism, or even just an unwillingness to understand Americas impact on the wider world, cannot be a good plan in an ever-evolving global economy and on such an interconnected planet. The global scene has changed dramatically since the inception of America and Trump attempting to pull up the drawbridge and ignore the peasants (i.e the rest of the world) at the foot of the moat is not a realistic option in the 21st century, not least because there are no castles anymore! Since the end of the Second World War the world has seen an increasingly globalised market place and an ever-expanding interdependence of nations, which should not be brushed off as seemingly unimportant to the largest economy in the world. Logically, if in Trumps America he and his supporters choose to ignore the international community, apart from when they want something from us, they risk hampering Americas own future economic success in an ever-expanding global economy.
America should not and cannot ignore its duty to the wider community. Contribution to the overall stability of the security of the world in terms of both economic health and wider issues of war and peace is the responsibility of America as much as, if not more so, than other nation states. As we all march further and further down the road to populist leaders and imposing tariffs as a lever of power, juxtaposed with globalised interconnectivity Trumps America not giving a shit about what the rest of us think is somewhat foolhardy. It may be that America is all that matters to some Americans, however while America continues to fart in the lift of global economic and social structures and while we can smell the stink across the international community, not giving a shit about anything happening outside your borders is not a very grand plan. Equally, on the flip side, when America sprays air freshener in the lift, we can also smell the fragrance of success, why on earth do they wish to ignore that? Would they really see the world burn?

Is it any wonder why Minnesota ranks as high as it does? It is because we do indeed pay for our higher quality of life and invest in the state. I would not want to live anywhere else right now, taxes or no.
