Maine House rejects 'stand your ground' gun bill

https://www.pressherald.com/2019/06/07/maine-house-rejects-stand-your-ground-bill/

AUGUSTA — A “stand your ground” bill backed by gun rights advocates that clarifies the right to use deadly force in self defense was defeated in the Maine House Friday.

The 78-57 vote to reject the bill, which came after a short debate, fell largely on party lines, with Republicans supporting the measure and Democrats in opposition.

“This bill seeks to correct state statute, to get it in line with the protection of our natural rights, mainly to defend life and obtain safety,” said Rep. John Andrews, R-Paris, the bill’s primary sponsor. Andrews said the bill was necessary to protect Mainers if they faced danger outside of their homes.

The measure would have removed the requirement in state law that a person first try to retreat to safety before using deadly force in a confrontation outside of a person’s home.

1. Republicans fully owned by the NRA

This is good to hear but elsewhere in the heartland, the NRA pretty much runs the show when it comes to firearm regulation and gun law.

In related news, yesterday the Cincinnati Mayor is filing a lawsuit against the State of Ohio to allow the city to be able to pass their own gun control laws; right now State law restricts and gun laws being passed in cities and towns. In the Red States NRA rules the roost.

3. Why retreat to safety when you can just shoot and say you were ascared?

Shooting people should always be a last resort.

I can't believe I even have to argue that point.

Shooting people should always be a last resort.

Who decides if the attacked, at the time and under the stress of an attack, could have retreated?
