Charlie Cook: There is one solution I have yet to hear from Democrats but would seem pretty obvious. First, defeat Trump in November 2020 and do it by a convincing margin, one that he cannot dispute or claim was stolen from him and that he could not contest. Then, after he leaves office on January 20, 2021, appoint a legal eminence, preferably a prominent Republican lawyer or jurist, possibly someone who served in one of the last two pre-Trump Republican administrations of George H.W. Bush or George W. Bush, to serve as a special counsel for the sole purpose of deciding whether allegations against Trump warrant indictment with a reasonable chance of convictionand if so, do it.
For the most bitter Trump-haters, what could be sweeter than watching him fight to stay out of jail and possibly not succeeding in that? It circumvents the constitutional concerns of prosecuting a sitting presidentas Robert Mueller cited the Justice Departments long-standing policies against itand it offers those who loathe Trump the pound of flesh they seek.

(58,785 posts)At the front of our minds should always be that we MUST win this next election.
We must stabilize and root out corruption to restore our healthy, well-functioning, moral democracy. The futures of all of us and our loved ones depend on it, and every option has to be evaluated for its effect on that. I don't doubt for a second that this reality is always in the front of our congressional leaders' minds.
We hope to impeach and remove this dreadful president as in normal situations would be an implacable duty. But it's not even our largest one. Strictly speaking, going after this one man while the many other criminals continue their takeover of our nation wouldn't even come close to meeting our responsibilities.
We have a duty, all right. My grandchildren will not live in fear with their freedoms in chains in a fascist state. Or even in an increasingly poor, disaster-ravaged RW-controlled kleptocracy as the world's most advanced third-world country.

(4,764 posts)nothing will happen to him. He will go back to his old ways and the Dems will be totally focused on cleaning up the mess he left . It will be a monumental task that will take all their energy. The image of Trump being led off in handcuffs will always be only a fantasy. It ain't going to ever happen. IMHO

Hopefully not, and if so, the GOP Senate might toss him aside to save themselves. 2 months with a lame duck Pence at the helm would be hugely entertaining.

(24,437 posts)Impeaching him and forcing an airing of his dirty laundry would make him easier to beat in 2020 regardless of whether or not the Senate convicts him IMHO. Once Trump is out of office, we need to hit the ground running trying to repair the damage he's done (again cleaning up after another awful Republican Presidency)
