Knowing that this administration is no friend to folks in need only makes it worse

(34,136 posts)We've been basically without any rain for six weeks. The grass is crunchy and it is getting serious.
Right now they are forecasting for Thursday through Tuesday between 50 to 80% chance of rain. I hope we actually get some of that since the last several times rain has been forecast we only got a trace here.

(269,087 posts)Enjoy - we got some last week and expect some more by Friday.

(34,136 posts)The last two years we got lots of rain all summer and all winter and in between. But that was just enough to bring the groundwater back to normal. This six week drought dropped water levels in all the lakes and steams - and the 90+ temperatures did not help at all.
We're just trying to get some of our plants re-established before we leave for Britain next month. We had some hardscaping done - new stone work for terraces along the south and east of the house. We lost some plants but the ones we've gotten back into the ground are doing OK so long as we water them at least every few days. I hate to leave that for our cat sitter to deal with but we may have to ask them to water at least once a week if it doesn't rain.

(34,136 posts)We have nothing planted in the new terraces, but we do have a plan for what will go in and how to proceed.
We do have a pile of six cubic yards of mushroom compost (there is a big mushroom farm over in Gadsden County and their mushroom compost is cheap around here, basically just pay for hauling). The terraces are full of volunteer weeds but they have not gone to seed this year. So Monday - if the mowing crew can come - the weeds will get whacked down, we have a guy to spread the compost over the terraces and we will cover them with black plastic. My theory is that the black plastic and Florida sun will cook the weeds, their roots and their seeds.
If - BIG IF - it is possible before we leave, the compost will get worked in and roots pulled out but I don't think there is time in the next month for that. So when we get back, we will pull back the plastic, root rake, till up the beds, and start planting.
My major frustration is I am now nine weeks out from my back surgery and I am not allowed to bend, lift, or twist at all. So I can't get in there and even plant little stuff like bulbs. I can't even pull a weed or hoe the beds! Supervising is not possible since I want SO FUCKING MUCH to get my hands in the dirt that I try to help.
Maybe by the time we return from Britain (we'll be gone nearly four months) I will healed enough to actually do some planting. If not, the company that did our plans will do it for a reasonable price since we're buying the native plants from them.
Hope you get some rain - and not just as hurricanes! a nice tropical depression or two could help,

(34,136 posts)I have another checkup before we leave and will ask then. We are cruising over and back and will have chances to swim on the ships. And on the way back we're stopping in St. Maartin, St. Thomas, Haiti, and Puerto Rico. While no one will want to see me in a bathing suit, I did find the one I wore when doing the rehab after my first knee surgeries and it fits again! So I'll take it just in case I get brave enough to go out in public in it, LOL!
