(32,659 posts)In the last 100 years the percentage of deaths of newborns to age 5 has declined from about 40% to under 1%. Of course some countries declined faster than others, but the point of the OP is to demonstrate that ALL deaths have gone down significantly. The modern medical breakthroughs, better nutrition for mothers and babies, better public health programs, and vaccinations have of course all made a major difference.

Edit to add: on second viewing I see that it also demonstrates the current trend of significantly fewer births per mother. Around 1900 each mother had 4 or 5 live births in her lifetime, while currently the number is between 1 and 2. But this is understandable because the babies can be expected to survive to adulthood now, and fewer women are required to give up working careers for full-time motherhood.
