I just don't get it. Are they doing it for their entertainment? We know that the Brits in general don't like Trump and don't want him in their country. So why would the Royal Family want to piss off their subjects with paying this much attention to the guy that they hate?

(27,121 posts)But I do agree with you, I think they should shun him.
But then, I am not a very diplomatic-minded person.
I do know that sometimes going the extra mile is required. But I don't see the benefit with Trump.
He will betray you no matter how kindly you treat him.

(112 posts)The Sovereign is the titular head of the government. The speech she reads at the opening of Parliament was written by the government. Any remarks she makes during a state visit by any head of state is also written by the government. Parliament is supreme.
The Duchess of Sussex is not participating in any of the events, supposedly because she is home with her newborn Prince Archie. The Duke of Sussex, aka Prince Harry, is keeping a discreet distance from Trump.

(16,396 posts)Set up by the prime ministers govt. As head of state the Queen is required to play a role in hosting foreign dignitaries including Fat Donny. In other words, its part of the gig.
In some cases the royal family will go above and beyond the protocols. They had a very warm relationship with the Obamas and hosted them at Windsor as well.
Their duties should not be mistaken for affection. Their role in his visit has been explained repeatedly here over the last week.

(24,414 posts)Just because they don't like him and probably think he's a royal (pun intended) screw up doesn't mean that they won't try to be respectful to the office.
Unless, they're proclaiming him to be the next best thing to sliced bread, I'm not following.

(102,293 posts)dictatorship emerged). The Romanian leader Nicolae Ceausescu, notorious for his repressive regime and later executed, visited the UK on a state visit with his wife Elena in 1978. It is said the Queen hid in the bushes to avoid further interaction after an unpleasant coach ride.
She's met with Syria's Assad, Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, Putin, Zaire's murderous Mobuto Sese Seko, and even more murderous, Indonesia's General Suharto.
I think she's "got this"...

(4,787 posts)...his inauguration, because she was looking for post-Brexit BFFs. He visited in 2017, but that was not a formal state visit. Then May decided to invite him for a state visit now, because he was going to be in France for the D-Day75 remembrances. As the head of state, the queen was obliged to go along with it.
But they're not going out of their way to do something special for FA45. The state visits follow a very specific formula, which varies little from one to the other, regardless of who the visitor is. Most of the events do involve the royal family, for the pomp and circumstances angle that Britain does better than most.
