The tar used for this was not hot asphalt tar, which melts at 400 degrees and would be lethal, but was pine tar. Pine tar is still used to make baseball bats sticky, but used to be used to waterproof tarpaulins and sailors clothes (jack tar = sailor). It is awfully sticky and had to be removed with turpentine, a slow procedure.
The reference in the picture to "making macarony" goes to the ridicule of aristocrats, the fashionably elite Tories and royalist s who received this treatment. It is why British soldiers denigrated Yankee Doodles hat feather as "macarony". The high Italian fashion of the time for huge elaborate wigs and extravagant clothing was called macarony, a mark of the aristocracy.
A modern version of this public shaming might be something like a shot of spray adhesive across the shoulders and a handful of pillow feathers. Kind of like.... a milkshake.

Since it adheres to the skin until it cools this is hot enough to cause minor skin damage. Most of the pain involved comes from its removal from the damaged skin with turpentine. Torture? sure. That's why I suggest the modern alternatives of spray adhesives or milkshakes. 'Making macarony' the painless way.

Please consider the use of pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets and other modes of non-lethal "Pain Compliance Techniques" by the police as torture as well. Even incarceration, and certainly imprisoned isolation. We are far from being as modern and civilized as we like to think we are.

Milkshakes.

Damn, Skippy...this dude is puling Democracy apart thread by thread to the point it may not hold up much longer and there is NO ONE to step in and stop it. My hope is that not only will Democrats repair it, but make it stronger than its ever been... What he says and does is NOT WHO WE ARE...we really believe in Truth, Justice and the American way..

It is rarely portrayed that way, but it surely was.

But, yes, I'd love to see karmic justice--whatever that might be--and even better immediate societal justice brought to bear with Trump/McConnell and quite a few others.

That's probably about as close to tar and feathers as we will get. I would be happy to see them both perp-walked and dressed in prison jump suits.

It might make him look a tiny little bit better, but there's not enough bronzer and pancake makeup and brown paper bags to ever make him look like anything remotely approaching 'good'.

Well, no... I guess I'm not surprised-- self-righteousness can be a difficult flaw in humans to hide.

Thank God you didn't mention drawing and quartering or (my personal favorite) the stocks... else you'd have been 'tarred and feathered' (for the sake of the very-clever sub-literate demographic-- that too was metaphorical rather than literal)

I am just frustrated watching this fool rip apart the Constitution in front of our faces, he is virtually destroying our Democracy in front of our very eyes, its like watching the Titanic go down and being helpless to do anything about it... I really wouldn't want him Tarred and Feathered but, I want to seen him brought to Justice and our Democracy repaired so this CAN NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!
