His age is certainly beginning to tell on him. He is not as steady as he was (which was not a great achievement before) and doesn't seem as sure of himself when walking. Of course, his mouth makes up for that last point. Too bad he doesn't engage his brain before speaking.

Going down stairs, he has to look down because he's not really light on his feet. But to look down, he has to lean out forward to look past his gut, which unbalances him and makes him feel like he's about to pitch forward. Thus, the handrail gripping and hand holding with a woman who routinely brushes him off.

That's fairly "normal" for an old fat guy. Hell, I do that myself.
