so, I assume there is a natural affinity for Trump and his ilk. From Wiki:
Abe is a conservative whom political commentators have widely described as a right-wing nationalist.[3][4][5] He is a member of the revisionist Nippon Kaigi and holds revisionist views on Japanese history,[6] including denying the role of government coercion in the recruitment of comfort women during World War II,[7] a position which has created tension with neighboring South Korea.[8][9] He is considered a hard-liner with respect to North Korea, and advocates revising Article 9 of the pacifist constitution to permit Japan to maintain military forces.[10][11] Abe is known internationally for his government's economic policies, nicknamed Abenomics, which pursue monetary easing, fiscal stimulus, and structural reforms.[12]
He's got some scandals, but it does not appear he's in danger of losing his political clout due to his closeness to Trump. The next national elections are in 2021 and
it does not appear he would be eligible (sans any additional changes) to be reelected for another term.
