Their spirit has remanifested.
It dwells now within the Republican Party.

(11,738 posts)We all need to understand that the Nazis, while having their own brand of Aryan supremacy mixed with the history of anti-antisemitism rampant across Europe, were not unique in their ideology. What they did, with their "Final Solution" was a unique way of undertaking genocide against Jews and other people they felt were undesirable, but there were Pogroms throughout the history of Europe, the trans-Atlantic slave trade was a function of the same attitude that spawned the Nazis. The Nazis actually admired and took from the racial segregation laws in the US South prior to and after the Civil War.
The United States has never dealt with the racial problems that have been present since before the country was founded. The "spirit of the Nazis" was never needed as our own good ole American spirit of White Supremacy has always been there ready to spring back to prominence. It was present in the Southern Democrats since the Civil War and when the Democrats evolved into the party of Civil Rights during the 1960's it found its new home in the Republican Party. Factions within the Republican coalition admire what the Nazis attempted and so use that moniker as a tribute, but the reality is that it is all the same old fashioned American White Supremacy that drives the KKK, the Alt-right, the Proud Boys, and all of the wannabe Nazi movement types who are coming out of the woodwork now.

That's the rightwing repugs who backed hitler before and during the war. They didn't get eliminated when we wiped out the Axis countries that were fascism's bases.
Those repugs who wanted fascism here helped the nazi war criminals flee prosecution. They founded the John Birch society, which subsumed the entire repug apparatus by '08.
