Charles Pierce:Trump Lost It in Rose Garden After His Attempted Power Play With Nancy Pelosi & Dems

Trump Lost It in the Rose Garden After His Attempted Power Play With Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats
An update on the circus at 1600 Pennsylvania.

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
MAY 22, 2019

The Cracker Factory was open for business outside the White House on Wednesday morning. Speaker Nancy Pelosi came out of a meeting with her caucus in the House and told reporters that she believed that "the president* was involved in a cover-up." Then, she and Chuck Schumer, both apparently firm believers in the power of hope over experience, went to the White House to talk about infrastructure. El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago thereupon told them he wouldn't be doing any deals while the House persists in investigating him and walked out. This might have been considered a shrewd power play, if the president* hadn't then gone out into his driveway and lost his shit entirely.

This was an "avail" of demented perfection. The man who bought off Stormy Daniels so thoroughly that his bagman is in the federal sneezer said, "I don't do cover-ups," and, against all odds, his tongue did not burn with fire. The constitutional genius with the world's greatest brain made certain to remind Democrats that, as unlikely as this sounds, one day in the far distant future—of the year, say, 1998—a Republican Congress might bring "the I-word" against a Democratic president for frivolous reasons. I mean, good lord, the Clintons came to one of his weddings. Didn't they talk? The man has a brain of tapioca.

Otherwise, the press availability was pretty much an impromptu performance of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. More talk of witch-hunts and hoaxes and a lot of yammering about how transparent he's been and a monstrous exaggeration of his alleged accomplishments. One can picture White House aides hiding under desks and skulking down back alleys in search of noonday whiskey. And, as the reports that leaked out in the immediate aftermath of the meeting revealed, the president* went somewhat berserk even by his own standards and walked out after three whole minutes. Pelosi responded at her own news conference by slipping in the Italian-Catholic version of the shiv used by Southern Belles when they say, "Bless Your Heart."

"I pray for the President of the United States and for our country," she said.

Said the Dems were giving him an infrastructure win that was on par with Jefferson, T Roosevelt and their infrastructure but that Dotard, basically, wasn't man enough to handle it.

It is trolling as an art form!

Here's the money quote:

Pelosi on Trump “taking a pass” on funding a signature infrastructure bill: “maybe it was lack of confidence on his part-he couldn’t match the greatness of the challenge.”

“For some reason, maybe it was lack of confidence on his part that he really couldn’t match the greatness of the challenge that we have .?.?. he just took a pass, and it just makes me wonder why he did,” Pelosi said. “In any event, I pray for the president of the United States, and I pray for the United States of America.”

because I understand the Speaker's point about having a legislative agenda and not just being about impeachment.

But if the President is not going to do anything while investigations are going on, then you don't really need him for a legislative agenda because he's not going to approve anything.

So at that point, there's not much stopping you from impeachment.

Trump just makes impeaching him easier and easier as the days go by.

I'm all about keeping our house majority, winning the senate and the WH. Those have a better chance than impeachment, IMO. Still does.

But, when an asshole says he's not going to do his fucking job anymore, what more is there?

I hate that he thinks he can do whatever he fucking wants. He needs to be shown otherwise.

They came up with plans, they presented them, and Trump wimped out and yelled he's taking the ball and going home.

I just hope the media plays this right. We need to put Repub stonewalling on display. Start playing the "they are blocking the infrastructure bill to protect the tax cuts to the rich they gave out last year" card.

That isn't inclined to do anything but that which keeps them in power, you may as well let that agenda (FOR NOW) be about the most liberally damned radical things you could possibly put out to the public...just say 'fuck it' and throw EVERYTHING at the wall, JUST to see what sticks, and what kind of traction you get from what, so you can gauge public opinion so you know the 'outside limits' of what you can actually PASS INTO LAW, later.

Just pass all that shit in the house, and see what the reaction is.

He seems to be unraveling. My concern is that power likes to protect power and while Trump is a complete idiot, his office holds a great deal of power and there are a host of people propping him up. When Nixon was staring down impeachment and everyone saw the writing on the wall, he bailed and Ford pardoned him for any "future" crimes, meaning that he was allowed to just go away. Also, when the Democrats took the Presidency and both Houses of Congress after a disastrous Bush Jr. presidency, there were no hearings and Dick Cheney and Bush Jr. were allowed to slink around trying to rehabilitate their images.

The above is where my "cautious" aspect comes in. Trump is so lazy, so greedy, and so used to getting away with things that he just keeps digging himself deeper. I am just concerned that he won't be held accountable for fear of disruption or other concerns.

"Caine Mutiny Court Martial"

We'll know the fat lady has sung when someone gets a drink tossed in their face.

Except, in the Caine Mutiny, it was because an attorney was forced to break an otherwise honorable man. There's no honor or shame in the Republicans.
