WASHINGTON The Trump administration does not have congressional authorization to go to war against Iran, the Democratic leader of the U.S. House of Representatives warned on Thursday amid escalating tensions in the region.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that she backed what appeared to be U.S. President Donald Trump's aversion to actual military conflict with Tehran.
"I like what I hear from the president that he has no appetite on this," she said. The Washington Post, citing several unnamed U.S. officials, reported late Wednesday that Trump was frustrated that his advisers may be rushing into war and that he preferred a more diplomatic approach and direct talks with Iran.
Pelosi also told reporters that the Republican administration would provide a classified briefing for top lawmakers the so-called Gang of Eight on Iran later on Thursday.

War Powers Act
declaring national emergencies for everything and never stopping/repealing/overturning the emergency
While Pelosi is technically correct, I doubt even the SCOTUS would stop Trump if he attacked Iran.

(6,044 posts)Putin may want Trump to saber-rattle enough to further isolate him from our allies and weaken the US in the region who have no intention of backing him in a war against Iran
Two years ago, it was the United States that framed regional issues, even for Iran, Kayhan Barzegar, the director of the Institute for Middle East Strategic Studies, in Tehran, and a former fellow at Harvards Belfer Center, told me in Moscow. Now thats over. Now its Russia which is very tempting to regional actors, to attach to the Russian dynamic. The U.S. produced regional confusion. Russia filled the power vacuum.
The deepening ties were reflected when Putin flew to Tehran, in November, for talks with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani. Our coöperation can isolate America, Khamenei told Putin, according to Irans media. Putin called the growing Russian-Iran coöperation very productive.
