<snip>
On social media, hundreds of ordinary Americans answered a call by talk show host Busy Philipps to share stories and end the shame. Philipps launched the hashtag #youknowme aimed at showing how common it is for women to end their pregnancies.
1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they dont know someone who has, but #youknowme, the 39-year-old wrote in a post on Twitter.
One day after its launch, nearly 50,000 people had liked or shared the post and almost 2,000 users had posted responses, including deeply personal accounts of their own abortions. - PoliticusUSA

(22,355 posts)the rate is about one in four. https://www.guttmacher.org/news-release/2017/abortion-common-experience-us-women-despite-dramatic-declines-rates
Despite recent declines in abortion, it is still a common procedure, and nearly one in four U.S. women will have an abortion in her lifetime, says Rachel Jones, lead author of the analysis.
Between 2008 and 2014, the overall U.S. abortion rate declined by 25%, from 19.4 to 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 1544. Key data points that may help explain this decline, including trends in unintended pregnancy, are not yet available for this time period. However, the available information suggests that improvements in contraceptive useparticularly among women aged 2024, who account for one-third of unintended pregnancies in the United Stateswere an important driver behind the decline. Abortion rates declined among all demographic groups from 20082014, but the declines varied widely by group.

(51,608 posts)There are basically 300 million US citizens so 50% (150,000) are women. 25% of that amount had an abortion...over 37 million have had on, 1/8 of our population. That is a hell of a lot! And consider that the actual number of abortions performed is even higher since some people have had more than one.
You would think that that number would scare GOP candidates up for reelection. The number of supporters in red states is largely anti-abortion, but some are pro-choice and this issue could turn them away from voting for an anti-choice candidate.
